Job Summary
The University of Victoria Students’ Society is currently seeking an Executive Director. The Executive Director reports and carries out the strategic direction set by the Board of Directors through the personnel committee. The Executive Director is responsible for the successful and engaged leadership and management of the Society, in cooperation with the General Manager and the Human Resources and Administrative Services Manager. Provides administration leadership and management of staff in the General Office, Graphics and Communications departments and affiliated organizations.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Participate annually with the Board of Directors in developing a vision and strategic plan to guide the Society.
- Ensure the goals of the strategic plan are continually being executed and reviewed.
- Increase development and effectiveness of UVSS services.
- Keep the Board of Directors advised on all aspects of the Society’s activities.
- Provide expertise, advice and direction on all Human Resource matters, most notably Collective Agreements, policies, Occupational Health & Safety, Employment Standards Legislation, WCB requirements, staff benefits and insurance and grievance processes.
- Ensure proper financial controls, processes and reporting are in place within UVSS services and affiliated organizations.
- Identify, assess, and inform the Board of Directors of internal and external issues that affect the Society.
- Collaborate with the General Manager to provide regular financial analysis and projections to the Board of Directors, Executive Committee and the Finance and Operations Committee
- Collaborate with advocacy groups and affiliated organizations to further their values and objectives.
- Establish and maintain a positive, productive UVSS relationship with the UVic Executive
- Proactive avoidance of legal issues: communication and of progress and recommendations regarding ongoing legal issues
- Ensure the legal obligations of the Society are fulfilled and any litigation involving the Society is handled responsibly, in collaboration with the Executive Committee
- Oversee the Insurance and Risk Management of UVSS
- Collaborate with the General Manager in pursuit of revenue generating opportunities for SUB facilities and services.
- Attend Board meetings and serve as ex-officio member of all departments.
- Collaborate and assist in establishing and maintaining an HR infrastructure.
Required Qualifications, Education & Experience
- Minimum 5 years of progressive senior management experience in a non-profit organization, leading a large staff.
- Must have a relevant Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master’s Degree is preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of leadership and management principles as they relate to non-profit organizations.
- Demonstrated experience leading Strategic Planning
- Demonstrated knowledge of Federal and Provincial legislation applicable to non-profit organizations, including Employment Standards, Human Rights, Occupational Health & Safety, Charities, Taxation, CPP, EI, and Health coverage
- Minimum 3 years of experience with financial reporting and budget management across multiple departments/operations within an organization
- Demonstrated experience in Human Resource Management, including experience managing in a unionized environment and comprehensive understanding of labour management, collective bargaining, and collective agreements.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Statutory and Regulatory framework governing Universities and Student Associations
- Demonstrated understanding of disability, gender, sexuality, race and class, and commitment to creating safer spaces.
- Demonstrated understanding of anti-oppressive and inclusive organizing practices.

This full-time, permanent position offers a competitive base salary ($80,000-$85,000 per year), pension plan and a very generous vacation and benefit package.
