COMMUNITY HOUSE COORDINATOR

The Lowertown Community Resource Centre (LCRC) offers a range of community programs and social services to all residents in Lowertown. Our organization works in an increasingly diversified community to improve quality of life, both at the individual and collective levels, by promoting community engagement.

Working within the Lowertown Community, the House Coordinator, under the direction of the Program Manager, builds Community House capacity, oversees daily house administration, and supervises program staff and volunteers.

Job Summary

You are an experienced leader who is skilled at priority setting and effective time management in a fluid and changing context. Your responsibilities would include the administration of the Community House, monitoring and evaluating programs, supervising staff, placement students and volunteers. This includes the recruitment, supervision, and recognition of volunteer and placement student activities. You coordinate the promotion of Community House and Lowertown Community Resource Centre activities. You engage community residents and partners in identifying issues and solutions while promoting community ownership of decisions. You will also work closely with the Coalition of Community Houses and broad-based community networks to promote social awareness and participate in advocacy. You will work closely with community partners, such as the Ottawa Food Bank and Ottawa Community Housing. You are an effective communicator both in French and in English, with proven communication abilities with community, staff, partners, and funders.

Education and Work Experience Requirements:

  • Graduate degree in social sciences or an equivalent combination of education and significant related experience;
  • Three to five years’ experience in community development/project coordination;
  • Working knowledge of community development values, principles, and the political process;
  • Experience with, and sensitivity to, minority groups, poverty, mental health, people of different ages, and an awareness of the issues that affect these groups;
  • Experience in program development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation;
  • Proven abilities in the area of community organizing, conflict resolution, and advocacy;
  • Proven abilities in administrative responsibilities, such as; budget planning, supervision, and recruitment of staff, coordination of maintenance issues of the building;
  • Proficiency in French and English required; Candidates will be evaluated in their proficiency of both official languages before being invited to an interview;
  • Fluency in identified non-official languages based on neighbourhood demographics (Somali, Arabic, Lingala, etc.) is a strong asset;
  • Knowledge of and understanding of ethnocultural needs and experience working in partnership with ethnocultural communities (particularly from African and Middle-Eastern countries); 
  • Egalitarian philosophy and non-judgmental attitude (i.e. gender, culture, race, sexual orientation, and other); 
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle required; 
  • Proficiency in Outlook and various Microsoft Windows software applications; 
  • Physical capacity to lift/ or move a weight of 20 lbs, climb stairs, bend;
  • Capacity to ensure a flexible work schedule including evenings or weekends.

Salary and Candidacy:

The salary range is $30.45-$36.54 with a competitive compensation package. The position is temporary for a one year period (June 2019- June 2020) (35hrs/week).
