Young Carers Program Assistant-Summer Student

16 weeks / 37 hours per week

This position is being advertised as a result of funding under the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) initiative. To be eligible for this position, you must be between 19 and 30 years of age on the start date of the job. You also must have been a full-time student during the previous academic year and be intending to return to full-time studies in the next academic year. You also must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident or a refugee under the immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

Salary Range: $17/ hr

Anticipated Start Date: As soon as possible

Hours: Predominantly 9:00 – 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Successful candidate must be flexible and able to work Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings as well as occasional weekends. Candidates MUST be available every day during the final two weeks of July.

Office Location: This is a hybrid position. The position involved primarily working from home but will also involve facilitating programs and events in different communities throughout Toronto.

Education: Completion of High School and preferably at least one year of Post-Secondary Education.

Interest or Experience in areas: Social Services, Child Life Studies, Child and Youth Care, Psychology, Community Development, Group Program Facilitation or a related field. Not-for-profit work and camp experience is an asset.

Languages: Fluent in English - verbal and written, other language(s) is an asset

Essential Skills: Strong communication skills (written and verbal), experience working with children and youth, experience working with diverse communities, experience with program facilitation, strong interpersonal skills, detail oriented, good computer and administrative skills, ability to work independently, take initiative and work well with others.

Work tasks for this position:

  • Creating and coordinating social, recreational and therapeutic programming for vulnerable children and youth aged 5-18
  • Facilitating programs on a weekly basis, and during two weeks of day camp (July 17th  – July 28th) for children and youth who are in a caregiving role for a family member
  • Creating, managing and distributing promotional program materials - print and web based
  • Promoting and providing information about the Young Carers Program by attending meetings, information sessions and presentations to relevant parties.
  • Providing administrative support such as creating electronic materials, letters, phone calls, lists and other documentation processes.

Started over 22 years ago, Hospice Toronto is Toronto’s first not for profit, volunteer-based, in-home hospice palliative care program. Hospice Toronto has become a recognized leader in providing high-quality, hospice care and support for people through all phases of their life-threatening illness, and their loved ones, at no charge.

We support adding life to days through our Volunteer Visiting Services, Caregiver & Bereavement Support, Expressive Arts, Children’s Support programs, and through Advocacy and Consultation Services.

The Young Carers Program provides support and services for children under 18 years of age, who act as caregivers for a family member with a chronic or life threatening illness, disability, addiction, mental illness, or language barrier. The program provides free activities and programs throughout Toronto that provide recreational, social, educational and skill development opportunities for Young Carers, while connecting them with peers and giving them time to just have fun! Programs help build self-esteem, coping skill development and resiliency.
