NCC’s Resettlement Assistance Program (RAP) coordinates the arrival, orientation and initial steps of settlement for government-assisted refugee clients. The RAP Worker is part of the RAP Team and is responsible for ensuring all direct services are provided to government assisted refugees during the period they are in temporary housing, as well as any related case management work with clients as directed by the Manager of Refugee Resettlement.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Direct Services

  • Interview clients to obtain case history and background information
  • Assess new clients’ needs and work with clients to address these needs
  • Assist clients in the process of adjustment to life in Canada in areas such as education, health, finances, housing, recreation, and employment
  • Provide appropriate and relevant information and referral services on community and government programs and services in a manner and pace suitable to the language level of the client
  • Deliver Resettlement Assistance Program (RAP) orientation sessions.
  • Provide support and information for clients experiencing personal and/or family issues
  • Follow up with clients in a timely and consistent manner
  • Provide or arrange for interpretation for clients when accessing community services
  • Assist with housing search and ordering furniture
  • Prepare moving papers
  • Assist with Canada Child Benefits and other government applications and forms
  • Advocate and case consult with other social service organizations and service providers.
  • Provide crisis intervention as required e.g. in cases of family violence.
  • Liaise with other service providers and advocate for clients as required
  • Work with volunteer support groups to coordinate services and meet clients’ needs
  • Have availability to work on call during evenings and/or weekends when clients are in temporary housing
Office Administration
  • Respond to telephone, in person or electronic inquiries or forward to appropriate person
  • Create, edit, proofread and finalize office correspondence, reports, statements, forms, presentations and other documents using Microsoft applications
  • Prepare and file client intake forms; keep counselling notes and records; update client files and/or client database; record additional information as specified (monthly statistics, iCARE, etc.)
  • Attend regular RAP team meetings and other staff meetings as required
  • Provide Manager of Refugee Resettlement with necessary statistics and information as requested and in a timely manner
General Responsibilities
  • Support the mandate of the New Canadians Centre Peterborough
  • Assist in organizing and/or participate in NCC events and activities including the AGM and Canada Day
  • Complete documentation such as expense reports and timesheets in a complete timely fashion
  • Create and maintain a Position-Specific Manual
  • Other duties as required
Qualifications:

Experience
  • Post-secondary education in a field related to Community Development, Social Work and/or Social Service Work, or equivalent working experience, is required
  • Experience in counseling and needs assessment, strongly preferred
  • Experience with crisis counselling, conflict resolution is an asset.
  • Work experience in office administration and/or the non-profit sector is an asset
  • Lived experience as a newcomer to Canada or as a member of a marginalized group, as voluntarily self-identified, is viewed favourably.
Competencies
  • Excellent English written and verbal communication skills applicable to a multicultural setting is required
  • Fluency in Arabic or other languages is an asset
  • Understanding and empathy for the struggles which immigrants, refugees and newcomers face in starting a new life in Canada; knowledge of issues facing resettled refugees in general and the Resettlement Assistance Program more specifically considered an asset
  • Understanding of anti-oppressive language and concepts including power, privilege, intersectionality, and racism
  • Detail oriented, with strong organizational, research, problem solving and time management skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Adaptability and responsiveness to client and organizational needs
  • Ability to work under pressure and address emergency situations
  • Knowledge of community resources
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle important documents in a sensitive manner
  • Demonstrated ability to keep accurate records, write reports and meet deadlines
  • Proficient in use of computers and Microsoft Office applications, including Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access
Other
  • Current Criminal Reference check with vulnerable sector screening
  • Valid Ontario Class G Driver’s License, and access to a vehicle is required
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some weekends and evenings
  • Ability and willingness to travel to related seminars, conferences, training, meetings, etc.
