About Ojibiikaan Indigenous Cultural Network 

Ojibiikaan Indigenous Cultural Network (Ojibiikaan) is a First Nations-led not-for-profit in Toronto. Ojibiikaan formed in 2018 in response to an identified gap in dedicated Indigenous Food Sovereignty programming to address food systems, food education, food justice, and agricultural and ecological practices and protocols in Toronto. Our mandate is to strengthen Indigenous roots in Toronto, the GTA and surrounding First Nations communities through knowledge exchange and land-based food projects.

Ojiibikens is Ojibiikaan’s Early Years program. Under this program, staff deliver virtual and mobile cultural and land-based activities for Indigenous children and their families in Toronto. This program is funded through the City of Toronto by the Government of Ontario Journey Together strategy for reconciliation. 

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Lead and manage the development of scope requirements, budgeting, resource management, planning, scheduling, monitoring and reporting on impact for programming.

  • Establish quality standards and measurement frameworks for program evaluation.

  • Oversee programs and workshops from conception to implementation, ensuring quality of services and that program design and execution supports the strategic priorities, mission, vision and values of the organization and the funding mandate.

  • Manage the development and implementation of protocols to ensure child protection, maintain program spaces, and ensure program environments are safe for vulnerable participants.

  • Recruit and positively support and lead staff in program delivery; provide input towards the establishment of individual objectives, training and work plans.

  • Plan training and professional development activities in response to the needs of the staff team.

  • Ensure program and staff uphold cultural values, legislated standards and regulations, organizational policies.

  • Participate in strategic planning and prepare proposals to support implementation.

  • Develop and maintain strategic relationships with partners and stakeholders, including government, community and other agencies to enhance program delivery.

  • Liaise and collaborate with other Journey Together agencies, and participate in committees and advisory groups as necessary.

  • Preserve confidentiality and seek to minimize risks for clients, employees and the organization at all times.

  • Perform other duties as assigned and related to the position.

Qualifications 

  • A degree from a recognized post-secondary institution preferably in early childhood education, social work, Indigenous studies, or related fields.

  • Three (3) years experience in program management and Indigenous programming.

  • Three (3) years experience in budget planning and oversight.

  • Clear Vulnerable Sector check.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

  • Experience working with Indigenous children and families is an asset.

  • Knowledge of Indigenous growing or food systems, or fluency in an Indigenous language is an asset.

  • Familiarity and experience working with Indigenous communities, agencies and service organizations in Toronto is an asset.

  • Ability to prepare proposals/grants by gathering information, identifying and clarifying opportunities and needs.

  • Demonstrated openness to learning and willingness to engage in cultural competency training. 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills .

  • Group facilitation and community engagement skills. 

  • Public speaking and presentation skills. 

  • Experience in leading a successful team. 

  • Ability to work with a variety of individuals. 

  • Ability to analyze problems, recommend and implement solutions. 

  • Strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office Suite. 

  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality. 

  • Ability to effectively handle client complaints. 

  • Ability to take direction and prioritize tasks. 

  • Ability to travel within the GTA as required, valid G license a strong asset. 

  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as required. 

This is a full-time contract position based in Toronto from November 2020 to March 31, 2021 with the possibility of extension. This position requires some local travel and some evening and weekend hours to attend meetings, special events and fulfill other job functions. The salary ranges from $73,800 to $85,540 dependent on experience.
