Employment Hamilton (EH) has been delivering employment and training services to clients and employers since 1972. Funded by Employment Ontario / Fedcap, EH offers Employment Counselling, Better Jobs Ontario and a large Resource and Information Centre.

In the role of Employment Counsellor, you would be working one-on-one with clients in their employment and training pursuits, as well as working with employers and community partners to benefit EH clients. As Workshop Facilitator, you would organize and facilitate POP - Power of Possible – a series of half-day workshops run over a 2-week period. Both roles require innovative thinking, good judgment and humour to motivate job seekers through the steps to success.

Employment Counsellor responsibilities include:

  • Meeting and working with a diverse clientele to establish and implement Employment Action Plans based on effective assessments that reflect the needs of each client

  • Creating effective resumes; assisting with realistic goal setting; advising on job search techniques; preparing clients for interview opportunities; assisting with apprenticeship pursuits

  • Developing and maintaining relationships with employers to successfully market clients

  • Maintaining accurate documentation of an ongoing caseload, both manually and electronically

  • Utilizing superior writing / proofreading abilities to create a variety of documents

  • Applying and continually enhancing knowledge of the Hamilton Labour Market, trends, tools, resources, programs and opportunities

  • Liaising with community partners / agencies and accessing resources to assist clients

  • Problem solving job placements, including at the client’s workplace; engaging mentors for clients and monitoring placements to ensure a successful outcome

  • Maintaining an up-to-date caseload of job seekers meeting all expectations for progress / contact activity

  • Motivating and supporting job seekers through making linkages to other supports as required

  • Marketing clients to employers, meeting with employers to provide services / tools / resources

  • Completing all files, reports, data entry and other documentation in a timely manner

  • Communicating, in a team setting, opportunities, ideas and information to assist with the successful outcomes of all clients and goals of the organization

Workshop Facilitator responsibilities include:

  • Engaging and dynamic workshop facilitation (both in person and via Zoom) to groups of job seekers; able to keep participants engaged and motivated to contribute

  • Positive and enthusiastic when sharing knowledge with others; able to connect with job seekers

  • Collaborate with counsellors regarding their clients participating in the workshops to update on their progress, problem solve, find opportunities and access other resources

  • Working with the counselling team to identify candidates, contact and arrange workshop participation with clients

  • Applying and continually enhancing knowledge of the Hamilton Labour Market, trends, tools, resources, programs and opportunities

  • Liaising with community partners / agencies and accessing resources to assist with successful outcomes ensuring current knowledge of all resources is maintained

  • Problem solving tech connection issues with workshop participants

  • Motivating and supporting job seekers through making linkages to other supports as required

  • Communicating, in both individual and team settings, opportunities, ideas and information to assist with the successful outcomes of all clients and goals of the organization

Qualifications

While experience in either or both roles is an asset, this is an entry-level opportunity, with training for the right candidate with the following qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully and professionally carry out the responsibilities listed above

  • Resourceful, organized and outgoing with a sincere interest in helping others

  • Excellent client service skills to successfully support and motivate clients / workshop participants

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Familiarity with the Hamilton area including business sectors and community resources

  • Demonstrated ability to use excellent judgment, establish rapport and communicate effectively 

  • Proficiency in Windows, Word, Outlook and Internet resourcing

  • Ability to organize and host Zoom meetings including troubleshooting attendee issues

  • Enthusiastic team player with strong time management skills

  • Ability to clearly document and accurately maintain all records and data management systems

  • Creative and adaptable, with the ability to learn and apply new skills quickly including teaching others by explaining key concepts and engaging the job seekers’ commitment to ongoing development

  • Ability to occasionally work outside of our usual office hours as required with notice
