Climate Engagement Canada (CEC) is a coalition of investors and financial market participants that will encourage Canada’s highest GHG-emitting corporations to adopt leading sustainability practices to promote a just transition to a net zero economy. CEC is coordinated by several investor networks including the Responsible Investment Association (RIA), Shareholder Association for Research and Education (SHARE) and Ceres. The RIA and SHARE serve as the joint secretariat. As part of its secretariat role, the RIA oversees finance, administration, and communications.

About the Responsible Investment Association (RIA)
The RIA is Canada’s industry association for responsible investment, and acts as the co-secretariat for Climate Engagement Canada. The RIA aims to drive the growth and development of responsible investment in Canada, with a vision to align capital with sustainable and inclusive development as codified in the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Our members include asset managers, asset owners, advisors, and service providers who support these objectives.

Please note that RIA staff are working from home through the end of 2021. When staff return to the office sometime in 2022, work will take place in a “hybrid” format. Staff will work from home on some days and at the office on others to facilitate collaboration and teambuilding. Our office is located at 111 Peter Street, Toronto.

Position Overview
As Communications Manager, you will join a small team working to promote sustainable finance in Canada. You will develop and implement communication processes, protocols, and systems for the CEC initiative. You will manage and execute communications projects and you will be the CEC’s in-house writing and communications expert. You will work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and external partners, such as SHARE, to develop and deliver communications strategies, materials, and content across various channels including but not limited to social media, website, marketing collateral, educational content, and reports for the CEC Steering Committee and other stakeholders.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop and execute a communications strategy for the CEC, in collaboration with the Administrative Director and CEC partners.
  • Manage all communications channels including email, website, social media, and media relations.
  • Manage small and large communications projects, in collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as the annual report, announcements, website content, social media, newsletters and thought leadership content.
  • Report on website and social media analytics to capture and optimize performance.
  • Perform basic updates to the CEC’s website on WordPress (such as blog posts), and delegate more technical website work to external contractors.
  • Draft communications material in both English and French languages. Perform small scale translations as needed, and delegate to external resources for larger scale translations.
  • Copyedit and proofread written materials.
  • Manage communications calendar in collaboration with SHARE and other CEC key actors.
  • Develop and implement marketing materials for key CEC projects.
  • The CEC Communications Manager is also expected to provide support with other tasks as needed to enable the success of CEC.

Key Qualifications:
  • Bilingualism (French and English) is required, with excellent writing skills in both languages.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a professional communications role, preferably in the investment industry or in corporate sustainability.
  • Demonstrable experience managing a variety of communications channels including social media and email platforms.
  • Post-secondary degree in a relevant field of study such as business, journalism, communications, or marketing.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Teams.
  • Knowledge of and/or proficiency in graphic design would be an asset.
  • Familiarity with the following software would be an asset: Photoshop, Google Drive, Dropbox, Slack, Salesforce, Apple Pages, Formstack, and SurveyMonkey.

  1. Communications Strategy and Execution – You have the skills and experience required to develop and execute communications strategies across multiple channels.
  2. Writing – You have outstanding writing skills, and you can easily adapt your writing style for social media, web content, or formal reports. You have the ability to curate information from multiple sources and communicate complex ideas in a clear, concise, and cogent manner.
  3. Project Management – You have experience managing projects in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
  4. Reporting & Performance Management – You have the technical and analytical skills to capture, understand and report on communications performance. You are able to use reporting and past performance to inform and improve the organization’s communications strategy.
