Location:              YEB - 46167 Yale Road, Chilliwack
                              ECEA - Robert Lee YMCA, Vancouver
                              Both positions are currently working remotely and virtually until further notice

Terms:                  YEB - Term, Full-Time
                              ECEA - Temporary, Full-Time

Hours:                  35 hours per week
 

Start Date:           YEB - January 4, 2021
                              ECEA - As soon as possible

End Date:            YEB - April 28, 2023
                              ECEA - March 31, 2021, possibility for extension contingent on receipt of funding

Nature and Scope:

The YMCA Youth Employment Programs provide flexible and holistic services to support youth to develop the skills and gain paid work experience to successfully transition in the labour market. This program has been designed to specifically support youth facing barriers to employment, supporting NEET, post-secondary and post-graduates aged between 15-30.

The Early Childhood Assistant (ECEA) is an employment and training program designed to provide training to youth ages 18-24 to become Early Childhood Education Assistants. This occurs through a multi-phased program beginning with a series of workshops and training sessions followed by practical work experience and on-going employment support.

This position has the primary responsibility of working directly with youth to assess, recruit and set up quality employment opportunities, providing on-going follow-up supports. The position will also involve outreach to the community in order to promote and recruit participants, and networking, establishing new connections with businesses in order to develop employment opportunities as participants begin working. The work environment is fast-paced and sees regular communication with Employment Coaches, Admin Staff and Program Manager.

 

Major Responsibilities:    

  • Coordinates participant recruitment and screening process, assessing their work readiness and fit for the various different avenues of the program
  • Develop and facilitate workshops pertaining to Early Childhood Education, Child Guidance Practices, Child Protection, general employability, and job maintenance skills
  • Completes needs assessment for each participant, selecting the appropriate intervention based on education, experience and employment readiness.
  • Records accurate information on numerous documents such as participant information forms, case notes and employment development plans
  • Instructs in employment seeking, application procedures, resume writing, interview preparation and employment retention skills, working closely with Employment Coaches.
  • Facilitates pre-employment skills, job search and career information workshops to youth
  • Asseses and supports multi-barriered youth with pre-employment supports such as housing, mental health, addictions, income supports, food security, hygiene & clothing and addressing other barriers to securing and sustaining employment
  • Assists participants in assessing their employment skills for employment opportunities and in creating an Action Plan to map out goals for employment and/or training with Employment Coaches.
  • Tracks and follows up on participants for outcomes reports, ensuring accurate data analysis for reporting both on weekly and monthly basis
  • Establishes new employer connections with an emphasis on employers that are inclusive and willing to provide accommodations for youth.
  • Tracks participant wage subsidies with employers, ensuring employers are willing to utilize program funding
  • Maintains contact with employers during the participants' employment and reports results to appropriate staff
  • Monitors participant performance within employment and counsels participants when performance is not satisfactory; works with participants to improve emplyment performance and gain necessary employment skills, or reviews other employment options
  • Tracks participant activity and progress data
  • Initiates and maintains on-going contacts with a variety of business and industry representatives and employment placement/training agencies to promote programs for participant placement
  • Makes cold calls to potential employers, creating new employer connections as well as replenishing past connections
  • Explains the benefits and employment support services provided by programs to employers, including addressing employer’s needs
  • Researches recruitment websites, agencies, and other resources for employment leads
  • Develops and executes creative outreach strategies to recruit program participants
  • Travels across Vancouver and Lower Mainland for meetings

 

Qualifications:

  • Post-Secondary Certificate, Diploma, or Degree in a related discipline, or equivalent work experience
  • Experience working with youth or persons facing barriers due to challenges with mental illness & substance use including concurrent disorders
  • Established relationships within the local business community and proven track record in employment placement recruitment
  • Experience with developing and facilitating community based programming and services
  • Exceptional communication skills, both internally and externally, via phone and email with the ability to adapt approach to different stakeholders
  • Experience leading pre-employment and career information workshops and presentations to a youth audience
  • Awareness of local youth resources and willingness to develop community supports
  • Ability to be flexible, adaptable and multi-task in high demand environment
  • Computer proficient – Microsoft Office (including Office 365, Word, and Excel)
  • High degree of independence and initiative within a team environment and comfortable working from home
  • Proven responsibility to coordinate tasks and work as part of a team
  • Confident with online communication platforms such as Zoom
  • CDP or related certification is an asset
  • Emergency First Aid/CPR-C Certificate required, can be obtained within 30 days of start date
  • Requires driver’s license and access to a vehicle to travel to meetings with employer and community partners
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Reference Check/ Vulnerable Sector Search issued no later than six (6) months preceding your start date
