Synopsis:  Kildonan MCC Thrift Store (KMTS) is seeking a Chief Operating Officer (COO) to oversee the operations of a large, dynamic thrift store supporting the local and international relief and development work of Mennonite Central Committee.  It is expected that the COO embodies MCC’s values of Christian commitment and peace/non-violence.   This position manages the overall operations of KMTS and is responsible to ensure that the mission and vision of the organization are achieved.  The COO reports to the KMTS Board of Directors and is responsible for the management of all staff and volunteers.  The COO is responsible for managing a budget of $2.6 million and carrying out the mandate of the strategic plan set out by the Board of Directors.  This position requires someone with a 4-fold focus – 1) big picture thinking of how to maintain and grow the retail arm of the organization; 2) managing the day-to-day operations of the organization; 3) commitment to the vision and mission of MCC; and 4) providing leadership to a diverse team of staff and volunteers. It is essential that the COO have strong inter-personal and communication skills.  With the myriad of daily decisions required in this fast-paced environment, it is important that the COO is able to work independently and make decisions efficiently.  

Specific Requirements:  

The COO will be an individual who demonstrates the following qualifications as developed formally or through relevant experience and informal training.

1.    Post-secondary degree in a relevant field (e.g. Business Administration) or the equivalent combination of education and experience with a proven mid to senior management experience;
2.    5 or more years experience in managing a business and/or organization,  experience working in a non-profit/social enterprise setting would be an asset;
3.    An understanding of the retail sector with specific interest in the used goods market; ability to think strategically, anticipate trends and vision for the future;
4.    Competency and experience in planning, controlling and managing a large budget;
5.    Excellent inter-personal and communication skills, including one-on-one interaction, managing meetings, strong written communication, experience with grant/proposal writing,  engaging with the media, building community connections, making public presentations, etc.;
6.    Experience supervising and motivating others, experience working with volunteers,  strong skills in building and leading a team, an understanding of human resource management, an understanding of how to build the capacity of others;
7.    Strong organizational and decision-making skills, self-motivated and able to work independently;
8.    Commitment to the vision and mission of MCC and KMTS
