Role Overview

Are you a dynamic, inspiring, relationship-focused visionary looking to lead one of the most prominent and sophisticated Jewish organizations in North America?  As the CEO of Hillel Ontario, you will directly impact the Jewish future through meaningful, engaging, Jewish identity-building experiences for our university students throughout Ontario. 

In 2015, Hillel Toronto became Hillel Ontario expanding its services province-wide. Over the last 6 years, Hillel Ontario has experienced incredible growth. As the largest Hillel in our global movement, Hillel Ontario serves nearly 14,000 students at nine Hillels throughout the province, including: Guelph Hillel, Queen’s Hillel, McMaster Hillel, Hillel Laurier, Hillel Ryerson, Hillel UofT, Hillel Waterloo, Western Hillel and Hillel York. Additional remote support services are made available for students in Ontario beyond the nine campuses and all university and college students are welcome at events, wherever they may take place.

As the organization's CEO, you will oversee the next phase of growth for Hillel Ontario, developing and leading a new strategic plan and ensuring that each campus has the resources it needs to properly serve its students within their unique environments. The organization's priorities will include: engaging increasingly greater numbers of students and deepening the impact of our engagement with those students; significantly increasing fundraising, doubling the current budget; leading and developing the senior professional team; adapting to and addressing the ever-changing needs of students; sustaining the organizational culture of being a great place to work; and continuing to engage, partner with, and inspire the lay leadership including the organization’s Board of Directors. The position reports directly to the Hillel Ontario Board of Directors.

The successful candidate possesses a high level of broad business and management skills, is highly effective at developing resources and financial support for the organization, and is passionate about building knowledgeable, proud and engaged Jewish student communities. They are excited to work with and are knowledgeable about GenZ and emerging adults. They are dedicated to ensuring that every Jewish student on every campus feels welcome, included, empowered, safe and supported at all times, they are a champion for our Jewish students’ rights, voices and roles through all facets of campus life. The CEO is focused on creating and reporting against shared and measurable goals for the common good – developing, resourcing, scaling and leveraging strategies for broad investment and impact. The CEO will be a humble collaborator while serving as the steward of the brand, understanding their role in growing and protecting the reputation of Hillel Ontario. 

CEO Responsibilities:

Fundraising:

  • Personally engage in fundraising with major donors and grant organizations as well as develop additional revenue sources. 
  • Create, drive and oversee a fundraising strategy that leverages the local and national network of community members, alumni and parents to support the multi-campus Hillel Ontario system. 
  • Promote a culture of philanthropy in the organization, both at the staff and Board level.
  • Strategic Planning and Brand Management:
  • Lead overall organizational strategic vision. Oversee the development of a strategic plan within 12-18 months of joining and begin its successful implementation in partnership with senior leadership and the Board. 
  • Establish Hillel Ontario as the top destination for Jewish students through communications, partnerships, and advocacy. 
  • Lead as the face and voice of Hillel Ontario. In partnership with our Chief Communications Officer, ensure messaging is consistent with values and inclusivity, especially when issues of antisemitism or anti-Israel arise.
Stakeholder Relations: 
  • Serve as Hillel Ontario’s primary spokesperson to the organization’s constituents, the media and the general public.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with various organizations, university staff, UJA-Federation and utilize those relationships to strategically enhance Hillel Ontario’s mission.
  • Consistently engage the greater community in the importance of Hillel's mission/purpose.
Staff Supervision and Development:
  • Build a culture of professional development and growth for the entire staff.
  • Build and maintain a culture and reputation as an employer of choice.
  • Ensure that compensation is competitive to attract and retain appropriate talent.
Financial Management: 
  • Ensure the fiscal integrity of Hillel Ontario, including accurate and timely submission of a proposed annual budget and financial statements to the Board.
  • Supervise the CFO to manage all financials responsibly, generally operating within the approved budget, ensuring maximum resource utilization, and keeping the organization in a positive financial position.
  • Communicate updates to the Board and Finance Committee.
Board of Directors:
  • Report to and work closely with the Board of Directors, including partnering with the Board Chair to oversee Board meetings, seeking their involvement in policy decisions and fundraising, supporting the recruitment of new Board members, as well as increasing the overall visibility of the organization.
  • Attend and support committee meetings.
  • In partnership with key stakeholders, develop the strategic vision of the organization to be incorporated into the design and implementation of the strategic plan
Organizational Management & Student Engagement:
  • Establish employment and administrative policies and procedures for all functions and for the day-to-day operation of the nonprofit. 
  • Working with the Chief Campus Officers, develop high-level opportunities for select students for stewardship, leadership development, and organizational input
  • Supervise the Chief Campus Officers to ensure the engagement strategy is dynamic, inclusive and successful in meeting its goals. Participation in select student programming on each campus is expected. 
  • Proactively maintain a safe climate on campus for Jewish students.   
What You Might Bring to the Job
  • 5+ years experience in a senior strategic leadership role, managing an organization(s) of comparable size and mission
  • Experience holding the weight of an organization, in a senior leadership role, managing a diverse and remote team across multiple geographies. 
  • High-level strategic thinking and planning. Ability to envision and convey the organization’s strategic future to the staff, board, volunteers and donors.
  • Active fundraising experience. Excellent donor-relations skills and understanding of the funding community with a history of successfully generating new revenue streams and improving financial results. Campaign leadership experience and success with multi-million-dollar campaigns, both annual and capital. 
  • Experience in successfully partnering with a non-profit Board of Directors, foundations and grant issuing organizations. 
  • Experience working in higher education, with university students or emerging adults.
  • Strong familiarity with Judaism, antisemitism, combating BDS on campus
  • Demonstrative financial literacy and management skills, including budget preparation, P&L management, expense analysis, forecasting, decision-making and reporting.
  • In-depth knowledge of the local Jewish community 
  • Knowledge about Canadian university politics and policies, ability to work within the administrative landscape on university campuses
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee, collaborate with, empower and mentor staff.
  • Solid organizational abilities, including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong public speaker.
  • Strong work ethic with a high degree of energy.
