About this position

CHOICE IN HEALTH CLINIC (CIHC) is a non-profit abortion clinic providing abortion services, STI testing, contraception, counselling and systems navigation to clients from across the GTA and beyond. We are currently seeking a Youth Accessibility Consultant to work 15 hours/week for 15 weeks.  

 

JOB TITLE: Youth Accessibility Consultant   

 

COMPENSATION: $14/hour  

 

CONTRACT DATES: November 3, 2020 – February 11, 2021 

 
JOB SUMMARY: This position will take a lead role developing and executing an Accessibility and Equity Assessment Project while also developing intake and booking skills at the Choice In Health Clinic (CIHC). The goal of this position is to both create best practices around accessibility while also exposing the candidate to clinic administration skills. We believe that this project will best serve clients if led by and for those with lived disabilities experience.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY: The Youth Accessibility Consultant receives general supervision from the Office Manager and weekly informal mentorship from the Executive Director. The Intake and Booking Coordinators will also provide job shadowing and training.  

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Must be able to complete a literature review of disability and abortion care, accessibility in health care spaces, and research approaches to providing abortion services to clients with disabilities;   

  • Must be able to create, distribute and analyse an online survey for potential clients that addresses their accessibility concerns at CIHC; 

  • Will create a resource document with links and contacts to disability community organizations for collaboration and client referral purposes;  

  • Will provide consultation to the Executive Director on the updating of accessibility practices for clients and employees;  

  • The person in this position must be able to exchange accurate information about the findings of the literature review and survey to the CIHC staff team; and  

  • Must be able to be in a stationary position for 50% of the time.  

  • Due to COVID-19 and the need for social distancing this position will primarily involve working from home and as a result the candidate must have access to a computer with a camera and reliable internet access 

 

NON ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  

  • Must be able to constantly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery such as a fax machine, client records, and printer;  

  • Must be able to check in clients on a computer and create physical charts upon the client’s arrival;  

  • Place courtesy calls or appointment reminder texts in accordance with the clinic’s policy on confirming and cancelling appointments; and 

  • Make cancellation and rescheduling calls to clients as required by policy or situational decisions. 

 

JOB SPECIFICATION: 

  • Solid pro-choice philosophy, including a demonstrated commitment to clients’ right to make choices in their lives, and the ability to support any client’s choice to have an abortion; 

  • Commitment to working within an anti-oppression framework and with clients from a diversity of backgrounds, experiences and social locations; 

  • Demonstrated success with collaborative team work that reinforces positive staff and client experience; 

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; 

  • Specialized knowledge of accessibility issues and AODA an asset; and  

  • Lived experience with disabilities an asset. 

 

Based on funding requirements, applicants must also be: 

  • Between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment; 

  • A Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act* and; 

  • Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations. 

 

*International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.
