Job Description
We are looking for a Principal/Senior Principal to join the Sustainable Investing team to play a leading role integrating climate change risks and opportunities into bottom-up investment decision-making processes and asset management activities across the CPP Fund (“the Fund”). This is an exciting and wide-reaching area of development for CPPIB.
Understanding the potential impact of climate change on investment returns is a critical issue for CPPIB. We are currently engaged in a wide-ranging initiative to integrate the consideration of climate change-related risks and opportunities into all aspects of its investment thinking, in a manner consistent with CPPIB’s mandate of maximising returns without undue risk of loss. As part of this initiative we are developing a set of innovative, industry-leading frameworks and tools to ensure that climate change considerations are factored into all security selection decisions. These tools are expected to be rolled out across the Fund in early 2019, with further development to occur thereafter.

As the ideal candidate you will be based in either Toronto or London and will possess both a knowledge of climate change issues and an awareness of how investment/financial organisations operate in practice. You will be one of the key points of contact and sources of information for CPPIB’s investment teams as they seek to factor climate change into their investment decision-making and asset management activities. It is vital that you be able to provide credible, relevant and timely advice to investment teams across a variety of strategies, asset classes and geographies.

Role-Specific Accountabilities
  • Help teams identify whether there are material climate change issues to investigate in relation to an investment decision and, if so, what those issues are. This process should take into account the characteristics of the investment, the investment strategy being pursued and the timelines involved
  • Provide investment teams with guidance on how to conduct any necessary due diligence work. This could include assisting the teams in using proprietary tools, providing them with access to data/research and/or connecting them with external advisors, with whom you will have cultivated relationships
  • Assist the investment teams in integrating the findings of their due diligence into financial models, risk pricing mechanisms and investment recommendations, as required.
  • Contribute to the development of detailed investment committee recommendations and take a role as necessary in answering challenging and/or technical questions
  • Form objective opinions and be willing to challenge or take contrary views based on thorough analysis and expertise
  • Oversee and manage multiple work products and relationships across asset classes and geographies both of a transaction and project nature
  • Additionally you will be involved in CPPIB’s larger climate change program and the development of CPPIB’s proprietary climate change tools, ensuring that they add as much value as possible to CPPIB’s investment decision-making and asset management capabilities. You will be expected to be a thought leader on the impact of climate change on investments across the Fund. You are a collaborative influencer that is interested in a challenging and high-performing work environment in a specialized and burgeoning area that requires flexibility, adaptability, initiative and creativity.
Qualifications
  • Significant years of professional experience (10+ years) working in a relevant or transferrable discipline
  • Strong preference for education or experience of a technical or science-based nature (e.g., engineering) that is linked to climate change
  • Relevant experience in investment and financial analysis considered an asset, with working knowledge of related concepts required at a minimum, and demonstrable knowledge of climate change as an investment issue
  • Solid research and analysis capabilities; ability to apply consistent judgement (i.e., discern and focus on what’s important, understand the wider context of transactions and be able to weigh and prioritize climate change-related risks appropriately)
  • Strong interpersonal skills, both as a communicator (oral and written) and a presenter, with a demonstrated ability to build relationships internally and externally
  • Some willingness to travel
  • Conduct consistent with our Guiding Principles of Integrity, Partnership and High Performance
