About this position

We’re seeking a compassionate and dedicated professional to implement our new Help Us Understand Grief (HUUG) program for children, youth and their families. Our HUUG program provides education, 1:1 support and group support to help children, youth and families find ways to communicate and support one another in their grief and maintain connections and memories of loved ones who have died.

You will play a crucial role in providing essential support to help children and youth navigate grief. If you have a heart for helping others heal and the skills to provide compassionate support, we want to hear from you!

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Counsellor - HUUG Program is responsible for supporting children, youth and families living with serious illness, dying, death and grief.  This is a two-year contract funded by a grant. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assess clients to identify goals and determine required interventions
  • Provide short term grief counselling to children, teens and their families who are living with a life-threatening illness or grieving a sudden or expected death
  • Plan, facilitate (or co-facilitate), evaluate and document age-appropriate grief support groups for children, youth and parents
  • Provide outreach support to schools
  • Collaborate with other service providers to provide a continuum of services for children, youth and families
  • Consult with team to ensure optimum counselling interventions and approaches are being utilized
  • Work in collaboration with team to provide professional consultation and education to other community organizations and professionals
  • Maintain confidential and timely client records
  • Complete assessments, client surveys and other processes associated with counselling and group support

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • MSW or MA or equivalent
  • Registration with Professional College
  • Training &/or experience in Grief and Bereavement is an asset
  • Knowledge of and commitment to philosophy of hospice care, with particular regard to the needs of children and families
  • Valid Drivers License and access to a vehicle for the purposes of business travel is required
  • At least 3 years of experience working with children, youth and families

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in community setting and working with volunteers
  • Ability to work unsupervised exercising a high degree of discretion and independent judgement
  • Outstanding organizational, time management, and problem solving skills

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Position requires flexibility in working hours (140 hrs/month) in order to meet the needs of the clients
  • Some evening, weekend work is required
  • Travel is required within city limits and occasionally in local rural areas
