 Responsibilities:

The Natural Capital Lab is an exciting new initiative, focused on a critically important sustainability issue. An overview of the lab is available here. This unique position provides the opportunity to contribute to the realization of a new, more sustainable society in Canada.

The Director, Natural Capital Lab is the Design and Development lead for this program. The key responsibilities of the Lab Director will be to deliver on the lab's purpose and objectives by the following:
  • Understand & be committed to the goals of the lab, and work to communicate these broadly
  • Ensure high engagement of funders, partners, advisors and participants
  • Recruit additional strategic partnerships to the lab
  • Attract interest and investment to the development of the lab
  • Nurture and develop collaborative partnerships
  • Develop and provide thought leadership on natural capital
  • Design lab activities to ensure the goals of the lab are met with high impact and support implementation, and create transformative learning experiences
  • Articulate the design constraints and experiments against the Sustainability Transition Lab model
  • Design and recruit a technical and advisory committee to support the lab
  • Design and recruit participants for the lab
Lead the development of networks to build awareness of the lab among key influencers
  • Support project management of the lab to ensure resources are used effectively and activities achieve intended impact
  • Develop reports, presentations and materials for workshops, presentations and events
  • Support the tracking and sharing of results generated by the lab
  • Contribute to building a high performing Natural Capital Lab team at TNS

The Director, Natural Capital Lab position provides the unique opportunity to work along side thought leaders at the intersection of the economy and the environment on a critical sustainability issue in Canada. The individual required for this position must have:
  • Strong knowledge and experience in the area of sustainability and ideally subject matter expertise in natural capital
  • Demonstrated experience leading large scale, multi-stakeholder collaborations
  • Excellent relationship management skills, partnership brokering skills, and the ability to engage internal and external audiences
  • Demonstrated experience with design and development of complex, change oriented initiatives
  • Ability to communicate effectively internally, externally, with one on one, small and large group audiences
  • Exceptional project management skills and demonstrated experience with launching and leading projects to achieve high-impact results
  • Ability to build a team and excellent people management skills including the ability to form relationships, understand needs, build support, and work effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders
  • Exceptional communication skills including the ability to write proposals, reports and presentations
  • Strong research skills including the ability to conduct interviews, analyze information and synthesize data
  • Excellent team skills and the ability to contribute in both a lead and support role
  • Effective work practices including self motivation, reliability and results orientation
  • Adaptability and comfort of working in a dynamic and complex environment, including the willingness to evolve the role as the project moves ahead
Qualifications:

Education: Masters Degree in Business OR Masters Degree in environmental or sustainability with business background, or equivalent work experience preferred.
Experience: 5 years experience in a similar role.

Additional Information:

The preferred location for this position is Toronto, however flexibility is available for the right candidate. This position reports to the Senior Director Design & Development, located in Ottawa.
