About this position
Director of Programs - Medical Education
About this opportunity
Are you inspired by an opportunity to play an important role in supporting positive change in medical education for resident doctors across Canada? Are you excited about supporting collaborative work with national institutions that influence medical education and healthcare nationally? Reporting directly to the CEO, the Director of Programs - Medical Education at RDoC will lead key national programs and manage resident engagement in advocacy with the goal of championing the healthiest ways to learn and work and creating the medical culture that residents want in order to be healthy residents and fulfilled physicians.
As part of this role, the incumbent is expected to contribute to building organizational institutional knowledge on all facets of RDoC’s work and service to resident doctors. Your role will include providing logistical support and communications related to the design, development and delivery of medical education programs and projects that fall within the organizations’ strategic plan.
Leading from behind, with resident doctors as subject experts on their lived experience, the RDoC team brings workable ideas to life. You will thrive as an integral part of that dynamic team. You do not have to be an expert in medical education to be successful in this role, but some familiarity with the medical education system is a significant asset. There will be a steep learning curve, but there will also be significant support as you build your understanding of your role. What is most important is that you are passionate about the impact your work will have on the Canadian medical culture, that you are excited to learn, and that you have an analytical mind and are a strategic thinker. Beyond that, you are impeccably organized. Multi-tasking and juggling competing priorities is second nature to you. You are an exceptional writer with the capacity to synthesize complex ideas, and present them concisely in perfectly written reports and/or presentation scripts. You know how to make efficient use of technology and you are fluent with the use of Google Workspace. You have a service mindset and you welcome the opportunity to build relationships with people of diverse backgrounds as we shape the education and training environment of resident doctors.
What you will do
Resident Engagement in Accreditation: RDoC has a well established program that supports residents as they prepare for their critical role in the accreditation process at their institutions. You will lead the execution of this program that involves coordinated strategic communications with residents, the design and delivery of pre-accreditation workshops, the implementation of a pre-accreditation survey and the preparation of confidential reports to support the accreditation teams. You do not need to be an expert in accreditation to run this program, however some familiarity with the academic accreditation process is an asset.
Collaboration with National Partners and Advocacy for Healthier ways to Learn and Work: Key national partners including the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the College of Family Physicians of Canada, the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada and others all have working groups and committees addressing various aspects of medical education. It is critically important that RDoC facilitate the inclusion of the resident voice on these working groups. We live and work by the principle “nothing about us without us”. You will play an important role in preparing resident volunteers for their critical role in providing the national voice of residents in these working groups. You will be intimately familiar with the work of these groups, and you will provide residents with appropriate briefing notes so that they can advocate successfully for the principles and positions RDoC has developed. You will follow up with resident volunteers to remain on top of ongoing developments. Your involvement with these groups will serve to build your institutional knowledge of emerging issues related to medical education and you will share this knowledge with the RDoC team. You will apply this knowledge, and play an important role in building RDoC’s strategies for advocacy for healthier ways to learn and work.
Project Communications: Your role in communications will be to synthesize materials and prepare concise, professionally written briefing notes, position papers, and other strategic communication pieces as needed. As an integral part of the team you may also be called on to take notes, prepare formal reports and presentations and develop content for our website.
Team Support: As RDoC is a small and dynamic team, you will not be working in isolation. You will have the support of the team and you will be expected to provide support to others as needed. We have an “all hands on deck” approach to our work. You will be responsible for your own administrative tasks and time management and you will be expected to “pitch in” on other tasks as needed.
