Job Posting – Conservation Analyst
The Southern Alberta Chapter of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS Southern Alberta) is seeking a Conservation Analyst to join our team in Calgary, Alberta. The Conservation Analyst would work with the CPAWS team on planning and implementing projects and campaigns related to parks and public lands in Southern Alberta. This is a full-time position of 37.5 hours per week for one year with the possibility of extension.
CPAWS Southern Alberta is a dynamic and successful science-based conservation organization that works to protect Alberta’s parks and wilderness areas and educate and inspire Albertans to get outside and engage in stewardship. For over 50 years we have helped create significant protected areas in Kananaskis, the Whaleback and most recently the Castle. This past year we have successfully supported Albertans in defending our provincial parks and opposing new coal developments in the Eastern Slopes. Our national parks, Banff and Jasper would look very different today if it were not for the work of CPAWS. We are known for being solutions oriented and working with government, industry, community groups and other stakeholders as well as Indigenous governments and groups to protect new areas and ensure that legislation and management prioritize conservation of nature and promote sustainable nature-based recreation.
The Conservation Analyst will be a key person on CPAWS Southern Alberta conservation projects. They will have a strong understanding of CPAWS Southern Alberta’s work and work closely with the Executive Director, Conservation Director and CPAWS staff both locally and nation-wide to strategically implement all directed conservation work over the next year. Specifically, the Conservation Analyst will:
- Research and stay on top of emerging parks and conservation issues in Alberta (federal and provincial), including creation of new protected areas, provincial and national parks management and public land conservation.
- Assist in researching and writing CPAWS position papers, recommendations documents, campaign plans, reports and engagement materials.
- Create maps and conduct spatial analyses using ArcGIS Desktop and/or Pro and ArcGIS Online to help understand and communicate conservation and land-use issues for public and internal use.
- Be proficient in the use of Esri products, able to conduct analyses without supervision, and have data research skills.
- Represent CPAWS and the conservation perspective at consultations and stakeholder meetings.
- Work with other conservation organizations, grassroots communities and other groups on collaborative projects
- Creatively engage partners, communities and the public on parks and public land conservation issues and CPAWS’ programs through outreach, social media and other strategic communications.
- Make presentations to public and stakeholders on CPAWS’ conservation work.
- Assist with fund development for this department as requested.
- Assist with other conservation projects and work as required.
The successful candidate will be a self-starter with an understanding of conservation in Alberta, possess strong technical knowledge, be proficient in ArcGIS, have excellent communications (verbal and writing) skills and who is highly organized, creative, able to multitask and meet deadlines. They will have completed a post-secondary degree in environmental science, geography, policy or a related field and or have a minimum of 1 years work experience in environmental science, geography, land-use and/or influencing public policy. Experience working in a not-for-profit is an asset.
Work hours will be mutually agreed upon with possibility to work both in the office and at home, occasional evening and weekend work may be required. Preferably the successful candidate would live in or be willing to relocate to Calgary or area; however other locations in Southern Alberta would be considered. A valid driver’s license is required for this position.
Salary range: $45,000-$49,000
