The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), Ontario is a provincial association, committed to improving services and support for individuals living with mental illnesses and addictions issues, and to the promotion of mental health in Ontario.

Resilient Minds (RM) is a national program designed to build the psychological strength and resiliency of fire fighters. It is an evidence-based, peer-to-peer skill building program which focuses on how to use protective strategies for firefighters’ own mental health but also how to support their peers and positively interact with distressed citizens. Resilient Minds is currently expanding to other first responder groups.

 

Job Summary

­­­­­­CMHA Ontario is seeking an experienced Program Coordinator & Trainer for a full-time contract until December 2023 with the possibility of renewal, starting immediately. The incumbent will report to the Interim Program Manager, Resilient Minds and will deliver Resilient Minds training to fire departments and other first responders across Ontario as well as providing coordination and admin support to Resilient Minds Program Manager. The position is based in Toronto.

The ideal candidate is comfortable operating under their own initiative and has experience with training delivery and program coordination. A bilingual candidate is a strong asset.

 

Core Responsibilities

  • Deliver Resilient Minds courses and train-the-trainer workshops to fire departments and other first responders across Ontario, according to expectations to ensure effective and appropriate training delivery
  • Respond to client and training requests
  • Outreach to first responder departments, halls, and associations to increase referrals into Resilient Minds training
  • Provide general administrative support, including meeting coordination, mailing coordination, and other projects as needed
  • Track training events and participants; report training activities to the RM Program Manager
  • Work with the Program Manager to position the program within the Ontario context and consider approaches to better meet the evolving mental health needs within Ontario’s first responder community
  • Prepare and deliver program presentations for various stakeholders
  • Manage and keep up to date a stakeholder database (Salesforce) that contains key contact and course information, and leverage this database for ongoing promotions, engagement, and program evaluation
  • Coordinate with CMHA branches across Ontario on the delivery of first responder programs
  • Implement quality assurance measures and evaluation practices as directed by RM Program Manager and offer suggestions for improvement.
  • Assist in curriculum development based on feedback from client and participant evaluations
  • Contribute to the design, development, and implementation of communications strategies, materials, activities, and educational resources
  • Participate in a national Community of Practice for Resilient Minds Instructor Trainers
  • Partner with Communications to share training activity updates with stakeholders
  • Participate in health equity initiatives for Resilient Minds, including maintaining an up-to-date Health Equity Impact Assessment, to increase accessibility and full participation for program participants
  • Assist with grant application submissions when requested
  • Attend regular meetings of the RM and CMHA Ontario teams

Skill-Based Competencies

  • University degree or college diploma in the social sciences, humanities, healthcare, sciences or equivalent experience (3-5 years of experience)
  • Experience in adult education and delivering training in a virtual and/or in-person environment
  • Ability to effectively deliver content and engage participants through group activities
  • Working knowledge of the mental health and addictions sector including psychological trauma (source, impacts, treatment options and recovery)
  • Experience in project management or coordination
  • Well-developed administrative, organizational, and problem-solving skills to effectively multitask, prioritize, and meet deadlines
  • Excellent writing and editing, with superb presentation skills with an attention to detail
  • Experience applying judgment, initiative, and discretion when dealing with confidential, legal and/or sensitive information
  • Willingness to learn about first responder culture and able to practice cultural sensitivity
  • Experience facilitating mental health topics a very strong asset
  • Experience working with first responders a very strong asset
  • Bilingualism (French/English) is a very strong asset
  • Experience in the health sector is an asset
  • Completion of a suicide intervention program, such as Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is an asset
  • Completion of Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an asset
  • Certification in the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF), Individual and/or Group Crisis Intervention Model (CISM) is an asset
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and knowledge of CRM software (an asset)
  • Marketing experience using social media platforms (an asset)
  • G Class license required

Salary

This position pays between $68,000.00 and $69,500.00 per annum, based on a 35-hour work week.

 

Working Conditions

This is a full-time, temporary (fixed-term contract) position working standard office hours (currently 35 hours/week). This position is based in Toronto, Ontario. Regular travel will be required, possibly requiring overnight stays.

This position is also a desk job with extended periods of sitting, reading, telephone interaction, and working at the computer. This position involves some moderate lifting, shipping, and handling. Attendance at various meetings throughout the workday/workweek will be required; meetings may occur on short notice, depending on the circumstances.

As a condition of employment, the successful candidate will be required to maintain and submit proof of full COVID-19 vaccination.

This position is within the OPSEU Bargaining Unit.
