THE CHRISTIE REFUGEE WELCOME CENTRE is a Christian organization serving and advocating for refugee families by providing safe, temporary housing, initial settlement services, and follow-up support. We influence and engage the broader public through sponsorship, education and advocacy initiatives.

THE CHRISTIE REFUGEE WELCOME CENTRE in partnership with the City of Toronto provides emergency shelter for refugee claimants and their families. The Centre provides basic orientation to life in Canada, assisting with the preparation of documents to make a refugee claim, making medical and legal referrals and providing a community of support. The Outreach Program provides ongoing support for residents moving from the shelter into the community.

THE CENTRE requires a Settlement Worker to work in the Outreach Program for an 18-month term employment contract from February 3, 2020 – July 31, 2021 on a full time basis (i.e., 37.5 hours/week).

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE:

  • Plan and execute day-to-day activities (e.g., appointments, drop-ins, phone referrals, etc.) of Outreach Program participants.      
  • Offer holistic case management support to Outreach Program families, starting with a Client Needs Assessment.
  • A good understanding of the Refugee Claim Process which includes a knowledge of different refugee statuses and immigration deadlines. Ability to make sound legal and immigration referrals and guidance through the settlement process
  • Provide advocacy and referral services; assistance with completing forms (e.g., Work permits, SIN, OHIP registration, school registration, etc.), and basic needs support.
  • Plan and implement workshops for the families in the Outreach Program.
  • Plan and implement 4 social events throughout the year.
  • Collect and maintain statistical data for funding reports.                                  

QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful candidate should possess a degree in social sciences/social work or at a minimum, a two-year diploma in social services. Demonstrated Case management experience and advocacy skills combined with a strong knowledge of the refugee claim process and the social service system are required. You should have experience working in a cross-cultural environment, handling confidential information and be able to manage conflict situations with skill and diplomacy. Additionally, strong documentation and verbal skills and a second language is an asset. In accordance with the Centre’s Child Protection Policy, a satisfactory Police Reference Check is required as a condition of employment.

The Centre offers a collegial work environment and is centrally located at Bloor and Christie Streets in Toronto.
