The Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region supports survivors of sexual violence. We listen, facilitate healing, and celebrate resiliency. Using an intersectional feminist approach, we work to transform systems which promote gender-based violence. 

 

Due to an upcoming parental leave, we’re recruiting a full-time Group and Workshop Coordinator! Reporting to our Manager of Services, the successful candidate should feel inspired by our work and have a genuine desire to support our mission, vision, and values. They will be an experienced group facilitator, with a warmth and maturity about them that helps foster a safe, supportive environment for survivors. 

 

Essential Requirements of Education / Experience: 

  • Post-secondary education in a counselling-related program 

  • 3+ years of relevant experience  

 

Key Areas of Responsibility: 

  • Group and workshop development and coordination 

  • Group facilitation/counselling with survivors of sexual violence 

  • Maintenance of client files and statistics 

  • Program evaluation 

 

Knowledge and Skill Required: 

  • In depth knowledge of sexual violence, trauma, and recovery 

  • Experience with group facilitation, crisis intervention, and advocacy with survivors 

  • Demonstrated commitment to anti-violence work and an intersectional feminist approach 

  • Exceptional organizational skills, with a keen attention-to-detail 

  • Extraordinary communication and interpersonal skills

Salary: $24.21/hr. to $28.48/hr., 35 hrs./wk. and a generous vacation package. This one year contract begins mid-January.

JOB DESCRIPTION 

Title: GROUP & WORKSHOP COORDINATOR 

Reports to: Manager of Services 

 

 

Job purpose 

Reporting to the Manager of Services, our Group and Workshop Coordinator will be responsible for the development, coordination, and implementation of groups and workshops for people who have been impacted by sexual violence. (This includes virtual/remote groups and workshops as necessary during COVID.) 

They will develop and promote a comprehensive group, workshop, and drop-in schedule that includes multi-session support groups, psycho-educational workshops, and therapeutic social sessions. These groups/workshops will also include specialized programming for people who are supporting survivors, LGBTQ survivors, and survivors from culturally diverse communities. They will provide trauma-informed, strength-based, stabilizing supports that embrace intersectional feminist approaches.  

 

Duties and Responsibilities  

Direct Service  

  • Coordinate all aspects of our Group, Workshop, and Drop-In Program. 

  • With direction and support, develop a comprehensive Group, Workshop, and Drop-In Schedule for our Centre in Kitchener and Cambridge. 

  • In consultation with the Manager of Counselling Services, determine topics areas for the program.  

  • Develop comprehensive group curriculum and materials, in consultation with staff members and/or students. 

  • Work in partnership with other staff members to ensure groups are promoted/advertised.  

  • Complete intakes with group participants, ensuring group readiness.  

  • Provide follow-up and support to group participants as necessary. 

  • Respond to inquiries about our Group, Workshop, and Drop-In Program. 

  • Facilitate groups, workshops, and drop-in times.  

  • Maintain client files, as per our Policies and Procedures.  

  • Collect statistics as requested. 

  • Participate in program evaluation. 

Other  

  • Participate in regular external clinical supervision sessions, and meetings with the Manager of Counselling Services.  

  • Participate in staff and Counselling Team meetings. 

 

Additionally, in a small agency, it is often the case that work of a nature similar to that in each job is either assigned or known to be necessary to be done. As well, from time to time, work that is not similar in nature to the job may also be required to be done by individuals in any job in order to accomplish the SASC’s purpose.  

 

Qualifications 

  • Post-secondary education in a Social Service-related program and 3 years of relevant experience. 

  • Knowledge and training pertaining to sexual violence, trauma and recovery. 

  • Experience in group development and/or group facilitation. 

  • Comfort and experience with virtual groups/workshops.  

  • Familiarity with community services.  

  • Exceptional organizational, time-management, and communication skills.  

  • A strong ability to work independently, with minimal supervision.  

  • Demonstrated experience working with marginalized and at-risk communities.  

  • Knowledge of how sexual violence relates to forms of oppression. 

  • Must attend and successfully complete volunteer training program upon initial employment.  

  

Communications 

Strong communications and interpersonal/human relations skills are required in the position to articulate policy, concepts, etc., motivate others and effect change both inside and outside the organization. There is regular contact with clients, as well as community partners. 

 

Working Conditions  

This job is partly performed in a comfortable office environment, with occasional travel around Waterloo Region to partner agencies. Much of the work in the office involves sitting, but there is opportunity to stand and move about.  

This job requires intense concentration during meetings/group with clients. Repeated exposure to details of violence and assault can lead to vicarious trauma. The need for debriefing, self-care and balance is critical for incumbents in this position.  

Much of this position will be home-based during COVID.
