Overview of the BC Society of Transition Houses:

The BC Society of Transition Houses (BCSTH) is a non-profit umbrella organization that provides support to Transition, Second and Third Stage Houses, Safe Homes, PEACE (Prevention, Education, Advocacy, Counselling and Empowerment) and Violence is Preventable (VIP) programs and associated organizations supporting the needs of all women, youth and children who experience violence. BCSTH works from an intersectional feminist framework incorporating a critical lens to the systems of power. BCSTH is a member-based organization and we exist in order to train and support the vital front line services that our members provide and to advocate and ensure that their experience and expertise informs the government and the public. BCSTH began with 6 members in 1978, and today supports 122 members that offer over 200 programs. Our goal is to support our members and amplify their voices and work collaboratively to end violence against all women, children and youth.

The BCSTH Team is currently seeking a full-time Children and Youth Services Coordinator. The Coordinator is expected to provide leadership in the area of children and youth program services and provincial policy within the organization. The position will support PEACE (Prevention, Education, Advocacy, Counselling and Empowerment) and Violence is Preventable (VIP) programs across BC. BCSTH currently trains, supports and advocates on behalf of 122 member programs that include 86 PEACE Programs and 36 VIP programs.

CHILDREN AND YOUTH SERVICES (CYS) COORDINATOR:

1. Relations with Prevention, Education, Advocacy, Counselling and Empowerment (PEACE) Violence Is Preventable Programs (VIP) and the PEACE for Canadian Children and Youth Project

  • Providing support, information and resources to all PEACE Counsellors, VIP programs and the PEACE for Canadian Children and Youth Project
  • Maintain an up to date list of all PEACE programs across BC and VIP Programs across BC.
  • Respond to phone and email inquiries regarding effects of exposure to violence on children and youth.
  • Assist with the development, implementation and delivery of trainings for PEACE, VIP and the PEACE for Canadian Children and Youth Project as they align with the BCSTH Mission and strategic plan.
  • Provide an overview to staff of issues that are emerging and contribute information to the funding quarterly reports and BCSTH annual report.
  • Remain current and up to date in the field of violence against women and the impact on children and youth exposed to this violence. 
  • Ensure all communications to members are timely, appropriate, and efficient. 
  • Complete PEACE and VIP deliverables as required in funding contracts.
  • Develop resources for PEACE programs.
  • Represent BCSTH on various committees, working groups and roundtables as directed by the Executive Director and other BCSTH Directors that align with the BCSTH mission and strategic plan. 

2. Community and Government Relations

  • Provide leadership and promote issues of violence against women, specifically the impact of violence on children and youth.
  • Bring forward relevant issues to assist BCSTH leadership to participate in the development of provincial and federal policies, legislation and procedures that affect women and their children impacted by violence against women.
  • Act consistent with the BCSTH mission and strategic plan and work collaboratively to end violence against all women and children.
  • Develop and maintain relations with specified agencies, key stakeholders and networks that are committed to ending violence against all women and children.
  • Provide the public with information, education and referrals that relate to our programs and/or programs available in their community.
  • Advocate on behalf of the BCSTH members, PEACE and VIP programs and women to government and other public bodies regarding violence against women and children.
  • Lead and/or assist with the development and funding of new programs, training and resources.

3. Program Coordination and Development

  • Coordinate surveys of PEACE and VIP programs.
  • Oversee and support other children’s services programs and projects, including but not limited to VIP.
  • Engage all staff, contractors, members and volunteers in meaningful ways that values their skills, ability and enthusiasm.
  • Respond to individual member’s request for information, relevant policy and legislation and other support regarding PEACE and VIP programs. 
  • Ensure reporting to provincial and federal government entities as per funding contracts. 
  • Manage and oversee budgets for projects, trainings or advisory committees and ensure budgets are on target.

4. Operational Planning and Implementation

  • Participate in the development of the BCSTH strategic plan and ensure that children and youth are represented.
  • Deliver on outcomes in a timely manner.
  • Ensure all PEACE expenses are at or under budget throughout the year. Provide plans for any variances that occur quarterly.
  • Ensure that financial protocol, policies and procedures are followed.
  • Maintain program and project files.
  • Assist with the development of possible grants and assist with the drafting and submission of grant applications.

5. Administration

  • Prepare all required reports.
  • Assist in supporting the operations and function of the office.
  • Participate in BCSTH events, presentations, projects and campaigns.
  • Prepare regular written reports on policy and advocacy issues.
  • Participate in the writing and editing of reports to funders, board members and others as required.
  • Assist in supporting the operations and function of the office.

6. Training

  • Deliver training and webinars and assist with training development and coordination including the Annual Training Forum.
  • Assist and support the Project Team of the PEACE for Canadian Children and Youth Project, the 30 BC PEACE Mentors and the 30 Training Sites and attendees.

7. Additional Support

  • Assist BCSTH team with writing and research as required.
  • Any other duties as required by the BCSTH office.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum five years’ experience within Transition Houses, Second Stage, Safe Home, PEACE and VIP programs or related anti-violence or community based programs, working with children’s and youth issues and an understanding of issues related to gender based violence.
  • Minimum Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to preventing violence against all women, children and youth.
  • Demonstrated experience of curriculum development, training and webinar delivery.
  • Well organized, able to prioritize multiple responsibilities with a keen attention to detail.
  • Excellent writing, communications and public relations skills.
  • Competent in computer software: Excel, Word, Power Point, and Outlook.
  • Excellent public speaking skills, able to participate in panels at conferences, deliver trainings and speak to key stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, implement and evaluate program development strategy.
  • Positive attitude and communication skills, both written and oral. 
  • Able to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Self-motivated, excellent interpersonal skills, strong analytical and innovative problem-solving skills.
  • Committed to working as part of a small team dedicated to innovative approaches.
  • A positive, enthusiastic and professional approach with a 'can-do' attitude.
  • Ability to work flexible hours is mandatory, position may require travel and overnight stays.
  • Ability to work in an environment that demands flexibility, resourcefulness, commitment and a sense of humour.
  • Qualified candidate is required to undergo a criminal record check.

LOCATION

This position is based in Vancouver, BC at the BCSTH Office and requires travel when permitted and required. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the BCSTH Office is guided by the Provincial Health Office mandates that are reviewed weekly. At present, the BCSTH Office is open and is a hybrid office with a mixture of on-site work and remote homebased work.

The position is 35 hours/week and BCSTH provides an excellent benefit and pension plan after successful completion of three-month probation period.
