CONTEXT:
The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation is the leading community-driven organization in Canada dedicated to creating a future without breast cancer.  Our investments in innovative and relevant research and education have led to progress in breast cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care. Since 1986, we have been at the forefront of a nationwide movement supporting and advocating for the breast cancer community.
 
At an operational level, the Foundation carries out its work across Canada through the efforts of its five business units and their staff and volunteer resources:  four regional offices in Atlantic Canada, Ontario, Prairies/NWT and BC/Yukon, and one Central Office in Toronto.  Each of the five business units of the Foundation has defined roles and responsibilities within a shared-services organizational structure, maximizing operational efficiencies and delivery of consistent nation-wide messaging. 
 
The largest of the Foundation’s four regional offices, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation – Ontario Region raises and allocates funds for programs unique to the needs and priorities of the breast cancer community in Ontario.  The Region carries out its mission through its provincial Board of Directors, its volunteer network across the province, and its staff.
 
POSITION SUMMARY: 
A skilled writer, marketer, and multi-tasker, the Marketing & Communications Specialist supports the development, execution, maintenance, and evaluation of marketing and communications plans, creative, tools /templates and content tailored to specific target groups (partners, donors, participants) to support awareness and growth of fundraising events and initiatives for the Community Development Department.  Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal), attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects from numerous stakeholders simultaneously are key elements to this role.  
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Works with Community Development team members to identify marketing/communication needs and supports the team with the  development of  annual marketing/communications strategies and tactics to support overall and event-specific fundraising objectives
  • In consultation with Director, Community Development, leads the conceptualization, production and dissemination of marketing and communications using vehicles such as paid advertising, digital and social media, public and media relations, collateral, and other vehicles as required 
  • Develops engaging content and clear calls to action targeted at donors, fundraisers, volunteers.  Ensures all content and collateral created meets overall Foundation Brand Standards and that all messaging used is current and relevant
  • At times develops graphics, collateral (posters, flyers, signs, etc) and sources images to accompany content where needed 
  • Evaluates results of marketing activities (puts measures in place where appropriate) and makes adjustments where necessary.  Creates surveys, conducts market analysis and competitive benchmarking where required.
  • Proactively identifies and executes improvements to existing resources
  • Coordinates the production of various communications materials, including securing printer quotes, managing vendors, creating and working to a production schedule, editing copy, coordinating approvals of materials and scheduling delivery
  • Maintains thorough knowledge of website content management tools and makes updates to the fundraising websites as needed. Keeps abreast of current web trends and makes recommendations for improvements to fundraising sites that will serve to keep them current and fresh.
  • Develops fundraising pages in Artez and/or Convio
  • Drafts and edits articles for the Region’s newsletters for Director, Community Development and CEO’s approval
  • Coordinates speaker requests with communications department
  • Collaborates with colleagues within the region (via marketing & communications committee) and across the organization to implement and manage marketing and communications strategies that relate to nation-wide and Regional events
  • Works in tandem with Marketing & Communications Manager to develop plans and activities which service the needs of the Community Development and Funds Development departments
  • Manages agency relationships and with feedback from Director, Community Development provides direction on marketing needs, creating graphics or collateral; sourcing quotes, developing collateral
  • Identifies and utilizes social media strategies to increase the profile of community events as well as the region.  Assists in creating content, monitoring social media profiles and research of new social media trends
  • Facilitates the development of a positive image, reputation and awareness of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation among all constituents
  • Participates annually in department goal setting and action plan development and budgets
 
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND ABILITIES:
  • University degree or equivalent in related subject area
  • Three to five  years’ progressive marketing and communications experience, including social media, digital media
  • Excellent oral and written English communications skills, including editing and presentation skills
  • Intermediate skills in HTML; knowledge of Convio fundraising software
  • Strong comfort with technology and related software, including MS Office and web-based applications
  • Basic skills in design or image formatting including comfort with related software such as PhotoShop, Illustrator or Adobe Pro
  • Some print production knowledge
  • Ability to use Social Media channels to promote the Foundation including Facebook, Blogs, YouTube, Twitter, Pinterest and Hootsuite
  • Content Management System experience such as Word Press and SharePoint
  • Good organizational skills and multi-tasking ability, including adapting and shifting priorities as needed
  • Strong background and up-to-date knowledge of social media, online sources and ability to keep connected with trends in digital media and technology
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a high-energy, service-driven team environment comprised of staff and volunteers
  • Ability to research, distill and convey complex information in a clear manner
  • Ability to succeed under pressure and achieve quality results in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to build and sustain positive mutually supportive stakeholder relationships with volunteers, suppliers and partner organizations
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to exercise sound judgment

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS AND ABILITIES:
  • Marketing and communications experience in a non-profit fundraising environment (preferably health-related)
  • Experience working with volunteers
  • Knowledge of French
 
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
CBCF is committed to employment equity and offers a competitive salary. The position is based in our Ontario Region office at 20 Victoria Street, Toronto. Standard workweek is 35 hours, over 5 days, representing 8 hours daily including a daily one-hour break. Work outside of the regular work day is expected for attendance and participation at special events. NOTE: CBCF Ontario Region policy on working hours and compensatory time specifies flex time and compensatory time arrangements.
