About this position

Burnaby Neighbourhood House (BNH) is a community-driven and community funded agency located on the unceded territories of the Tsleil-Wauthuth (səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ), Kwikwetlem (kʷikʷəƛ̓əm), Squamish (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw) and Musqueam (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm) nations with a unique focus on neighbours supporting neighbours. BNH is seeking its next organizational leader.

The Executive Director of Burnaby Neighbourhood House provides leadership to the organization and its associated non-profit organizations (Burnaby Community Services, Burnaby Meals on Wheels, and Burnaby Seniors’ Outreach Society). The ED works collaboratively with a leadership team to ensure programs and services are responsive, relevant and effective while also ensuring efficient and accountable operations. The position officially reports to the Board of Directors, but they work in a shared leadership model to ensure the organization achieves its core purpose.

BNH has grown substantially in the past five years under the compassionate and strong leadership of Antonia Beck. This charity seeks to identify and fill gaps in needs, especially among Burnaby’s most vulnerable communities. Doing this has resulted in the organization adding programs and services that strengthen community stability. And it is a cornerstone of well-being across this geographically and demographically diverse municipality.

Characteristics of the next Executive Director of BNH

The successful candidate for this position will be a compassionate person who is deeply committed to community-based leadership. They will thrive if they are a collaborative person who enjoys sharing leadership by connecting with colleagues, program participants and Board members.  Grounded in principles of community development, the successful ED of Burnaby Neighbourhood House will be someone who is politically astute and a strategic thinker while being willing to roll up their sleeves to get things done.

BNH is seeking someone with experience in implementing principles of justice, equity, inclusion and decolonization who lives those values. People with lived experience as a person of colour, member of the LGBTQ2s+ communities, and/or part of the Indigenous communities of Canada are encouraged to apply.

Role of the Executive Director of BNH

Community Work and Planning
  • Promote Neighbourhood House program integration philosophy by ensuring programs have opportunities to interconnect and achieve client integration across program areas.
  • Nurture existing and new partnerships with other service providers.
  • Facilitate community involvement in all aspects of the Neighbourhood House.
  • Apply a community development approach to ensure the Neighbourhood House is responsive to community concerns and needs.
  • Attend community activities and events that support the advancement of BNH’s purposes of building strong communities.
  • Attend community networking meetings and support and provide leadership in collaboration across service providers for the benefit of Burnaby communities.
People Management
  • Maintain a culture of shared and collaborative leadership across the organization.
  • Provide a model of compassionate, strategic and engaged leadership for others.
  • Establish a culture of volunteerism and peer-led engagement.
  • Ensure a safe and meaningful volunteer experience for those contributing unpaid labour to BNH (program volunteers, practicum students, pro bono professional support, Board members, Committee members, community advisors etc.)
  • Ensure a strong organizational culture of inclusion, collaboration, and equity for staff and volunteers.
  • Lead organizational culture that attracts and retains great staff and volunteers.
  • Ensure adequate selection, training, supervision, support and evaluation of Neighbourhood House staff and volunteers.
  • Ensure legal compliance with employment, health and safety and other workplace-related laws and regulations in BC.
  • Ensure effective systems, fair compensation, and a healthy work environment.
  • Establish effective performance evaluation processes that support meaningful work experiences and effective teams.
  • Manage conflict in the organization in ways that build strong, sustainable, and diverse teams.
Programs and Services
  • Oversee all programs and activities of the Neighbourhood House.
  • With the Leadership Team and in consultation with the community, identify and develop programs that will address community needs in Burnaby.
  • Build a learning culture that contributes to evaluation and strengthening of existing programs and services.
  • Engage and retain skilled staff able to contribute to high quality programs and services.
Governance:
  • Align Board and Staff around shared vision.
  • Work in collaboration with the Board to build and nurture long term strategic goals.
  • Strengthen the financial sustainability of the organization.
  • Support effective Board development, structure and Committees
  • With the Board and Leadership Team, engage and support diverse volunteers to serve on Committees and the Board.
  • Work with the Board Chair to ensure a highly functioning and effective Board of Directors focused on governance not operations.
  • Ensure compliance of the organization in legal requirements of a BC non-profit society and charity.
  • Participate in board meetings and retreats.
Revenue Development
  • Create working relationships with current and potential funders.
  • With the Leadership Team, develop and implement revenue development plans.
  • Identify and pursue grant funding opportunities.
  • Maintain necessary infrastructure to sustain and build revenue streams.
  • Diversify funding to sustain the organization long-term.
  • Oversee and implement donor relations activities.
  • Market and promote the Neighbourhood House and raise the organization’s profile.
Financial Management and Administration
  • With the Leadership Team, ensure transparent and effective financial management policies and systems.
  • Prepare and monitor the annual budget.
  • Oversee annual financial reporting for AGMS and funders.
  • Ensure effective financial reporting to the Board of Directors.  

Qualifications:

  • 5 or more years of experience in nonprofit management in a leadership role.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills
  • Knowledge and experience in human resource management and a reputation for supporting engaged, dynamic and effective teams.
  • Education and/or knowledge of community-based programming, community engagement and development.
  • Proven experience in advancing justice, equity, inclusion and decolonization in an organization.
  • Education in business administration, non-profit management, social work, fundraising, or similar.
  • Strong administration skills:  financial management and personnel management.
  • Experience with funders and donors in social services in BC
  • High level of tech knowledge and capacity
  • Second language is an asset, especially in common Burnaby languages such as Farsi, Arabic, Spanish, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Hindi, Punjabi, and/or Tagalog.
  • Ability to work flexible hours.
Location: The current CEO maintains an office at South House (4460 Beresford St) and works from Brentwood House (2055 Rosser) one day per week. Regular attendance at each of the three locations is expected. The Executive Director will have a level of flexibility in managing their time, but an active, in-person presence is important for the effective management of the organization.

Accountability: This position reports to the Board of Directors who are a Policy Board and support a shared leadership model with the Executive Director and their Senior Leadership Team.

Hours:   The organization maintains a 35-hour work week. Working with volunteers, including the Board of Directors, does require some weekend and evening work.

Salary & Benefits:
  • Excellent health care benefits after 3 months
  • Pension contributions of 3% after one year
  • minimum 3-weeks holiday to start
  • Salary range $120-128,000 based on experience
