Frontier College is a national, non-profit literacy organization that was founded in 1899. We work with children, teens, adults and families to improve their literacy skills. We work with a variety of partner organizations to deliver volunteer-run, community-based programs across Canada. Frontier College is accredited under the Imagine Canada Standards program.
 
Frontier College has partnered with Employment and Social Development Canada  to deliver literacy and essential skills support to low-skilled individuals in workplace and community settings in various places across Northern Canada. Literacy and essential skills (LES) are defined as reading, writing, document use, numeracy, digital technology, thinking, oral communication, working with others, and continuous learning. The main focus of this project is to increase access to support for individuals seeking to improve their employability, to get and keep a job, to adapt and succeed at work, and to access lifelong learning opportunities, including post-secondary education.
 
The instructor-Coordinator (IC) position in Iqaluit will work closely with participants, community partners and employers to implement the project in several workplaces and community settings in Iqaluit. The IC will assess needs, provide essential skills upgrading support through tutoring and instruction, and ensure that participants are able to achieve their goals and requirements to move forward on their employment and life goals. The IC develops and maintains partnerships, establishes and delivers individualized learning plans, and, as much as possible, recruits and manages volunteer tutors. The IC may also have to support a local Community Literacy Catalyst (CLC) or other staff (if applicable).
 
Overall Accountability
The IC is a member of the Frontier College staff team of the Nunavut region and is directly responsible for volunteer tutors and paid staff such as a CLC. This position reports to the Project Manager, Nunavut Projects.
 
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Promote and advertise program on a continuous basis through workplace/community outreach and media promotion
Assess participants to determine their LES needs and to develop customized training plans along with learning goals
Ensure that training resources and supports are reflective of the academic and practical applications of the program and future employment or educational paths.
Design and deliver academic upgrading instruction, particularly in the areas of workplace or work readiness literacy and essential skills
Mobilize, train, supervise and support volunteer tutors
Support 1 or 2 staff such as CLCs (if applicable)
Develop, maintain and strengthen relationships with business and community sectors partners
Maintain learner files, track statistics and contribute to overall project evaluation and reporting
Act as a Frontier College representative in various contexts (trade shows, conferences, media) if required.
Assist the Nunavut Project Manager with other tasks, when required (e.g. camp counsellor training)
Some travel required.
 
 
Skills and Attributes
Social Sciences Degree or equivalent experience teaching/tutoring/mentoring adults
Knowledge of literacy, essential skills and adult education principles
Ability to develop tools and strategies for various learning styles
Energetic, responsive, resourceful
Ability to work with remote supervision/support
Tolerant of ambiguity and flexible to change
Ability to work a flexible schedule – evening work/weekend work will be required
Experience in developing partnerships with the community and employer sectors
Excellent spoken and written communication in English
Computer skills (MS Word, Outlook, Excel and Internet)
Organized, able to manage multiple tasks and deal with stress
Positive learning attitude
