Wild ARC is a Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre operated by the BC Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SPCA). As the only wildlife rehabilitation centre on southern Vancouver Island, Wild ARC treats close to 3,000 wild animals annually from throughout the region. Wild ARC is open to accept injured and orphaned wildlife 7 days a week. In order to ensure the best care for our wild patients the facility is not open for public tours.
Our Wild ARC facility located in beautiful Metchosin, just outside of Victoria, has an opening for a full-time Branch Manager beginning December 2019. This position is accountable for the management and coordination of Wild ARC rehabilitation and admin staff and all operational activities. This position will ensure operating budget of the location is adhered to and that overall optimum care is provided to the wild animals cared for at the facility. This position reports to the Manager, Wild Animal Welfare who works closely with the Branch Manager on the vision and direction of the facility.
This position will develop and maintain relationships within the community, promoting public awareness of the location and its services. The manager will promote the BC SPCA’s mission and implements provincial initiatives within the facility and surrounding community. The manager is also responsible for the health and safety of staff and volunteers and as well as maintaining facility infrastructure and implementing capital projects.
You will work with the Revenue Development department to plan and coordinate fundraising events for the location, and develop new and existing donor relationships in collaboration. You will also work closely with an Assistant Manager who oversees volunteer management and supports communications.
You will use your strong management skills to lead a team of dedicated staff and foster a positive work environment. You will build long-term trusting relationships with staff and the community and act as an advocate for animals in the community. You will have a hands-on approach and always believe in the highest standards of care and welfare for animals.
Knowledge, skills & abilities you bring to this role:
- Post-secondary education with relevant course work in either animal welfare, biology, conservation, environmental studies, geography, natural sciences or veterinary science plus a minimum of five to eight (5-8) years’ relevant experience, three (3) of which must be in a supervisory/managerial capacity; or an equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable to the Employer. Relevant experience includes, but is not limited to:
- Hands-on wild animal experience;
- Application/communication of wildlife legislation and regulations;
- Project and program management, including budget planning and management;
- Fundraising;
- Communications, including media and public relations-related work; and
- Working in or closely with non-profit organizations
- Proven interest in animal welfare; philosophical harmony with BC SPCA policies and protocols
- Strong teamwork approach, demonstrated work ethic and attention to detail
- Excellent interpersonal skills and conflict management, particularly with reference to managing staff and volunteers; experience in working/managing in a unionized environment is considered an asset
- Fundraising, financial management and business skill sets
- Effective organizational skills and strong building operations and infrastructure knowledge
- Excellent oral and written communication skills (telephone, writing) with a wide range of audiences; confident with public speaking
- Critical thinking and problem solving skills
- Demonstrated ability to work independently under minimal supervision
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, planning and prioritizing a varied and demanding workload in order to meet fixed deadlines
- Proficient computer skills: in depth knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, database management, presentation software and file sharing
- Ability to work flexible hours (i.e. evening, weekend and holidays) when required
- Good physical stamina and health (must be able to lift 40 pounds); vaccinated for tetanus and willing to be vaccinated against rabies
- Valid Class 5 BC driver’s license in good standing
