About this position

The Behaviour Consultant provides a range of behaviour management and early intervention child focused services to promote the optimum functioning of the child, aged birth to 12, within the licensed child care or home child care environment. 

The Behaviour Consultant also works directly with children with complex, developmental, social, emotional, and behavioural needs to assess, develop and implement behaviour plans in their child care or home child care setting, in collaboration with a Resource Consultant and in partnership with child care staff and parents.

This is a full-time permanent position. 

Strides Toronto is a multi-service agency providing services to young people from birth to age 29 and their families in East Toronto. Formed in January 2020 through the amalgamation of Aisling Discoveries and East Metro Youth Services, Strides Toronto provides a range of community, residential and treatment services to improve the mental, social, and physical health of infants, children, youth and their families. We provide individual, group and family interventions that include mental health counselling, autism services, education, outreach and referral, early intervention, day treatment and community support. 

As Lead Agency for infant, child and youth mental health in Toronto, Strides Toronto works with 25 core service providers to design and implement system-level improvements that transform access to services, experience of services and the mental health outcomes for Toronto’s diverse communities. 

Strides Toronto has a budget of $30 million and more than 350 employees providing services out of 19 locations across East Toronto. The organization Is accredited by the Centre for Accreditation and the predecessor organizations have a long history of providing high-quality services in East Toronto.

 What will you do? 

  • Work directly with child care staff, Resource Consultants, children and parents/caregivers to provide behaviour management support to referred individuals.
  • Conduct observation, environmental assessments from behaviour perspective and designs classroom plans to promote positive behaviour.
  • Conduct assessments of child’s functioning and individual needs to develop an individualized behavioural program plan and strategies related to children for staff of child care centres or home child care setting.
  • Ensure all intake-related functions and behavioural program plans are completed; Monitor and measure outcome activities.
  • Develop and deliver behaviour management training and support to provide staff of child care centres, home child care settings and families with strategies to support children to manage more successfully within their environments.
  • Model for and coaches child care staff to develop their skills to work with specific children with social, emotional and/or behavioural challenges 
  • Develop strong and effective working relationships that support positive outcomes for children and child care staff.
  • Ensure necessary documentation is completed, updated and maintained in a timely manner, and in accordance with established agency standards.

What are we looking for?

  •  Master’s degree in psychology, behavioural science or equivalent, with direct experience working with children 0-12 years of age with special needs
  • 3 years related experience working in an Early Learning and Care setting
  • Sound knowledge of child development, theoretical models and interventions in working with infants, toddlers, preschoolers and children with specialized needs and their parents is required
  • Excellent oral and written skills 
  • An understanding of trauma informed practice
  • Ability to operate computers and related technology comfortably and efficiently. 

 Additional Assets 

  • Fluency in another language(s). 
  • A valid Ontario driver’s license in good standing with access to the use of a vehicle

 Additional Information

This role is a part of OPSEU Local 567 bargaining unit. 

Salary range is from to $59,190 to $68,184.

It is a requirement of employment that successful applicants be fully vaccinated against COVID 19 or have received an exemption from the organization’s policy prior to the commencement of employment.

Vulnerable Sector police check is also required upon hire.
