About ABC Literacy Canada

ABC Life Literacy Canada is a national non-profit organization that has been inspiring Canadians to improve their literacy skills since 1990. We envision a Canada where everyone has the skills they need to live a fully engaged life. We work with business, government, communities, and individuals across Canada to create and share free literacy programming for adults and families. Our programming covers financial literacy, family literacy, workplace literacy, health literacy, digital literacy, and civic literacy.

 

Position Overview

ABC Life Literacy Canada is looking for a Project Manager for a renewable one year contract.

You will be responsible for managing our new Activate Learning program, a four year educational program for adults in Newfoundland and Labrador. You will oversee the:

  • budget

  • curriculum development

  • promotion

  • reporting, and

  • evaluation

for the project as well as engaging in creative thinking about how best to meet project targets.

You will also manage one Project Coordinator, based in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The Project Coordinator is responsible for outreach, coordination, and community engagement for all Activate Learning programs and initiatives in Newfoundland. 

The Project Manager can work either in Toronto, Ontario out of our office at Yonge and Eglinton or in St. John’s, Newfoundland alongside our Project Coordinator. ABC won’t pay for relocation to either St. John’s or Toronto. Staff in both locations are currently working remotely as a result of the pandemic.

You will be a key member of our small and nimble team. We're ambitious lifelong learners, keen to make a difference in our community and grow our skills while we're at it. We care about the literacy learners, teachers, and volunteers we support: compassion is an important part of our work. So is being effective and efficient. We work at a high capacity, and our Project Manager will, too.  

 

Contract: 1 year, full time with possibility of renewal

 

Position Duties

People management

  • Manage one Project Coordinator and their workload
  • Advise Project Coordinator on projects as needed

  • Provide ongoing mentoring and coaching

  • Identify and address areas for performance improvement and professional development

  • Approve vacation, sick days, and lieu time

  • Conduct annual performance reviews

 

Project management

  • Manage revision and production of new and existing materials, including curriculum design and development for adult learners
  • Prepare internal and external reports

  • Liaise with external vendors (translators, evaluators, writers, editors, designers, printers)

  • Liaise with government funder

  • Develop and deliver presentations to external audiences

  • Represent ABC at conferences and external meetings

  • Develop and maintain relationships with key partners across Canada

  • Oversee and support Project Coordinator in their community outreach

  • Responsible for achieving program deliverables, including hitting outreach targets, tracking progress, managing budgets

  • Lead outreach strategy for community engagement for all ABC programs and initiatives

This role involves occasional evening or weekend work (workshops, awards events, conferences), and occasional travel.

Qualifications

You are:

  • Experienced managing a project and budget

  • Interested in and enthusiastic about literacy with a willingness to learn more about the cause

  • Experienced in curriculum design for adults

  • Experienced in leading and motivating a direct report

  • Comfortable working with remote teams

  • Experienced in developing and implementing outreach strategies for successful community engagement 

  • A confident communicator, with excellent verbal and written skills

  • Professional, driven to take initiative

  • A strong problem solver who responds well under pressure

  • A big-picture thinker with a strong attention to detail

  • Able to work independently and cooperatively in a team environment

  • Fluently bilingual in English and French

  • A lifelong learner

  • Highly organized
