About this position

The Diocese of Niagara is seeking a full-time treasurer and director of finance to provision its ministry and oversee finance and accounting functions, along with those of its affiliated entities, through effective management support, stewardship of its assets, budgeting and planning, reporting and compliance, internal controls, cash management, risk management, and government reporting. A senior member of the diocesan staff, the treasurer and director of finance supports the vision and leadership of the bishop and the mission of the diocese as a whole. On a daily basis, this position reports to the executive officer and is also accountable to the bishop and Synod.

The annual operating budget of the diocese is nearly $4 million, with more than $50 million held in its investment portfolio to support the outworking of God’s mission of love in the cities of Hamilton and Guelph, the regions of Niagara and Halton, as well as Wellington, Haldimand and Dufferin counties.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all diocesan financial activities, including its book of accounts, banking, and budget, ensuring policy and regulatory compliance, and safeguarding diocesan assets.
  • Manage and supervise the work of the diocesan finance staff.
  • Ensure the provision of insurance, investment, payroll, and information technology services.
  • Monitor investment performance and liaise with the diocesan investment advisor.
  • Work closely and collaborate with church leaders, both at the diocesan and parish levels, sharing best practices for sound financial management and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide practical support and counsel to volunteer boards and committees.
  • Make reports and presentations to a variety of stakeholders on financial matters.
  • Carry out canonical duties, including acting as a signing officer of the diocese.
Qualifications:
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation with at least 7 years experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership, supervisory, entrepreneurial and interpersonal aptitude, including experience with managing staff and supporting non-finance staff and volunteers.
  • Ability to work with various accounting systems – including Sage 300 [ACC-PAC] & QuickBooks Online – and apply accounting practices and procedures in a not-for-profit organization.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Capacity to multi-task and effectively prioritize to meet established deadlines.
  • Passionate about supporting the ministry of the diocese and the wider the Anglican Church of Canada and good working knowledge of its culture, norms, and structures.
  • Current and satisfactory Police Record Check.
The salary for this position will be commensurate with experience (expected range $90,000-$105,000) and include pension and benefit plan participation.
