THE POSITION

The Crisis Outreach and Support Team (COAST) provide first and secondary response to persons in crisis, including mental health and addictions intervention.  This includes mobile calls and assertive outreach in partnership with police and transporting individuals needing psychiatric care to hospital.

The Integrated Mental Health & Addictions Crisis Network provides immediate crisis support and/or counseling for individuals experiencing mental health, addictions or situational crisis for all ages.  The crisis counsellor will assess each situation to determine the best way to help.

As a COAST/Crisis Counsellor, you will:

  • Work in collaboration with other members of the Integrated Crisis Network
  • Utilize a systems approach for the assessment process to stabilize and manage immediate crisis situations
  • Liaise and advocate between the client, family and other members of a treatment team
  • Act as a key liaison with police services (OPP) regarding knowledge exchange and relationship maintenance, and support Crisis Intervention Training for police services
  • Interpret, evaluate and prioritize information gathered during triage and/or the assessment to assist with developing treatment, action and safety plans
  • Provide short-term crisis intervention to stabilize the situation, resolve problems and/or provide referrals, education, support, information and follow-up
  • Offer solution-focused counselling, both on the phone and in person

Hourly wage: COAST Hours: $27.01; Crisis Hours: $21.17 plus shift premiums and group health, dental, accidental death & dismemberment, and travel insurance benefits

Hours of work:

  • Sunday 12pm-12am (Crisis)
  • Mondays 9-6:30pm (COAST)
  • Tuesdays 9-6pm (COAST)
  • Wednesdays 9-6pm (COAST)

Start date: January 5, 2020

Contract ends: April 1, 2022

TO APPLY, YOU MUST:

  • Have a university degree in a related Social Services field
  • Provide proof of current registration in good standing with a governing body such as CRPO or OCSWSSW
  • Have a minimum of 5 years’ clinical experience working with individuals, groups and/or families affected by addictions and mental health conditions
  • Have experience assessing for safety risks and safety planning and a demonstrated ability to apply relevant theoretical models when providing assessments to identify strengths, needs and level of risk, and case management
  • Be successful in attaining Ontario Provincial Police Clearance
  • Be proficient in MS Office and be familiar with databases
  • Have access to reliable transportation
  • Be able to manage frequent and severe exposure to direct and vicarious trauma
