Working closely with the communications, philanthropy, and programs team, the (Senior) Communication Officers’ primary responsibilities include building the capacity of WUSC staff and volunteers in Canada and overseas to develop effective communications plans and products, and creating corporate communications content through a variety of mediums (written, audio, and video) for a variety of channels (e.g. fundraising appeals, newsletters, reports).

Key Areas of Responsibility

Communications Training and Guidance

  • Support the development of project- and country-level communications strategies to ensure all teams are communicating effectively with all stakeholders.
  • Coordinate the communications working group (comprised of WUSC staff and volunteers in Canada and overseas), and create resources and deliver workshops to help build their capacity to craft compelling communications products.
  • Monitor project and country communications platforms and products to ensure they accurately represent WUSC (verbally and visually) and contribute to the better positioning of WUSC as a leader in our field, globally, identifying stories that would be of interest to Canadian audiences.

Content Creation

  • Research, write, and edit a variety of high-quality stories about WUSC’s work and thematic issues of focus for a variety of channels (e.g. annual report, blogs, fundraising appeals) and in a variety of formats (e.g. written, audio, video).
  • Support the fundraising cycle by creating a cohesive series of communications to solicit funds and report back to donors.

Qualifications

  • University degree in a related field
  • Superior researching, writing, and editing skills essential
  • Ability to work in Spanish and/or Arabic an asset
  • Strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office, Google Suite) essential
  • Basic design and video-editing skills (e.g. Adobe Creative) a strong asset
  • Experience working for a non-profit and/or in international development preferred;
  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission and values of WUSC
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Must be motivated, creative, hardworking, optimistic, and a team player
  • Must be available for occasional weekend and evening work. Time in lieu will be provided.

Languages: English and French required
