Part-time Communications Job Opportunity
Location Requirements: Applicants must live within the province of British Columbia.
Working Conditions: Remote position with opportunity for some in-person work on an as-needed basis. The Single Mothers' Alliance staff work from home and convene for staff meetings and events in rented spaces if needed and if possible. No overseas applicants, please. Location anywhere in BC is fine.
Hourly wage: $36.00 per hour
Full/Part Time: Part-time contract position with benefits if requested.
Expected Hours: 21 hours per week; set daytime hours and set days.
Funding Type: Grant project funded; the role is funding dependent.
Job Term: 14 months
Job Term Start: Monday, January 30th, 2023, or early February 2023
Job Term End: March 31st, 2024, with funding dependent extension possible
ORGANIZATION
The Single Mothers’ Alliance is a membership and community-based non-profit of female and gender-diverse lone caregivers raising children in communities throughout BC. Our mission is to alleviate family poverty in BC including the poverty experienced by female and gender-diverse lone caregivers and the children they care for. Our members and participants reside in forty-one diverse locations in the province, including cities, towns, and rural and remote locations.
We conduct our mandate through research into policy solutions and raising public awareness about the importance of a public policy approach to alleviating family poverty in BC. We advocate for law and policy reform and lobby the government to implement policy solutions that directly impact lone parent-led and socioeconomically disadvantaged families in the province.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Knowledge Mobilization Coordinator is a communications position responsible for developing and executing knowledge mobilization, knowledge translation, campaign actions, basic graphic design, and related communications activities for the Single Mothers’ Alliance including all social media and website activities and upkeep. A member of the SMA staff team, the Knowledge Mobilization Coordinator works under the supervision of the Executive Director and in collaboration with SMA staff to coordinate the dissemination and communication of key research data and resulting policy recommendations to multiple stakeholders including funders, partners, SMA members, the non-profit and labour sector, and multiple levels of government. The role is particularly related to our multiple participatory action research projects partnered with UBC, existing and new strategic campaigns and public policy lobbying and advocacy carried out weekly.
DUTIES TO INCLUDE:
Strategic communications planning: Updating and execution of a strategic knowledge mobilization and communications plan that is tied to key projects and lobbying timelines for SMA projects and activities; aligning SMA communications across all communications channels with our brand and style guide.
Website management: Regular updating and maintenance of the SMA website, including website development with graphic designers, expansion of integration with advocacy apps; implementation of strategies to maximize website community accessibility and communications.
Social media coordination: Creation and maintenance of strategic social media strategy and plan to disseminate timely research results; creation of social media content collateral using SMA brand and style guide; scheduling, monitoring, and managing social media outputs across all SMA channels: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram (and potentially others).
E-mail communications related: Writing, scheduling, and sending of internal and external e-blast communications and list management; writing of internal and external e-blasts using Nation Builder template and tool for multiple stakeholders: SMA members, funders, project partners, campaign-based lists, and the public.
Campaign and action related: On-going management and set up of New Mode actions, use of new action tactics and apps, petition building, NationBuilder integration, and more. Content determination and strategy; position will entail determining strategic communications for timely campaign and lobbying-related actions and activities.
Graphic design related: Work closely with the Research & Policy Lead and external designer to create engaging and creative reports, bulletins, research and policy briefs, pamphlets, and PowerPoint presentations for a diversity of audiences on an as-needed basis for the Justice at Work project and other SMA research projects.
Peer researcher/community related: This position will entail collaboration, support, and input into close work with SMA members and participants (led by the UBC Principal Investigator, SMA Research & Policy Lead, and staff team) to generate creative peer researcher-led knowledge mobilization strategies and creative outputs. All member-based work follows organizational trauma-informed best practices and our Basis of Unity. You will be collaborating directly with peer researchers in a supportive environment.
Tracking and analytics: The creation of durable systems, plus ongoing monitoring and recording to track SMA communications outputs, responses, and engagement analytics across all SMA communications channels and social media platforms to meet funder outputs and outcome requirements including earned and unearned media hits.
Other duties: Perform other duties on an as-needed basis related to knowledge mobilization and communications for SMA as requested by the Executive Director.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Undergraduate degree minimum: Master’s Degree preferred (in progress or completed) in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, digital media, and engagement.
2-3 years of experience as a communication professional carrying out communications-related tasks with accuracy in a (preferably) non-profit setting that included lobbying and campaigning.
Previous work experience in a social justice/human rights/policy-oriented environment in the areas of anti-poverty, gender equality, children’s rights, poverty, employment, gender-based violence, anti-racism and/or decolonization is a huge benefit.
Campaign and lobbying-related communications experience essential. Basic knowledge of the BC policy and political provincial (some municipal and federal) landscape is crucial.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills with a demonstrated ability to write in a variety of styles for a range of audiences and translate data into impactful and accessible materials and outputs.
Excellent attention to detail and accuracy, with experience writing copy and copy-editing, proofreading, and preparing content for publications, documents, reports, and communication materials for distribution.
Demonstrated experience creating content and managing primary social media channels and engagement campaigns, including the most recent best practices and tools.
Ability to learn or existing knowledge of NationBuilder and Squarespace websites and e-blast/list management, New Mode, and other key advocacy and organizing tools.
Graphic design skills and experience; some knowledge of graphic design programs, Canva, other graphic design tools and resources SMA can utilize, professional report writing. Comprehensive computer literacy; familiarity with Office 365; Word Suite, Teams Chats, SharePoint, Canva, New Mode, Adobe, other.
Knowledge of communications analytics and management tools; SEO practices.
Ability to work in a highly collaborative and diverse community-based environment following the SMA Basis of Unity.
Self-starter highly collaborative team member who can adapt to evolving organizational needs and work in a non-hierarchical collaborative team environment.
Ability to work independently under the supervision and guidance of the Executive Director; a pro-active problem-solving approach to all collaborative work; ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced public policy and campaign-related advocacy environment.
