About this position

LDAPR is seeking an enthusiastic, talented educator who loves children and teaching to coordinate and deliver our new Academic Tutoring program! You are passionate about working one-on-one with students in the elementary grades and are well versed in working with youth with learning differences. You will be developing content, working with other tutors, delivering tutoring with youth clients, and assessing program impact. LDAPR is under new leadership, and we are seeking an innovative, creative person who will love being on the ground floor of a renewed organization!

Position Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging, supportive one-on-one tutoring (in-person and virtual), working with children kindergarten to grade 8 with learning differences/disabilities – current tutoring frameworks are Jump Math and Reading Rocks

  • Develop additional curriculum and materials to enhance tutoring program content

  • Assess the learning needs of new tutoring participants via input with student and family, reviewing psycho-educational assessments, individual educational plans, and other mechanisms

  • Capably address challenging behaviour in youth students with learning differences/disabilities

  • Engage and support other tutors delivering the programs

  • Engage individual students during sessions in an engaging, caring manner

  • Communicate with families/caregivers of youth clients in a respectful, collaborative manner

  • Assess the progress of individual tutoring students and the program overall

  • Fundraise for program needs and potential expansion

Skills and experience

  • B. Ed. or equivalent education and experience, with elementary Ontario curriculum knowledge

  • Experience working with elementary aged youth with learning differences required

  • One-on-one tutoring experience required

  • Strong knowledge of teaching of reading, spelling, and math for children with learning differences

  • Experience dealing with challenging behaviour in students with learning differences/disabilities

  • Curriculum development experience preferred

  • Experience assessing student learning performance and challenges

  • Experience with Reading Rocks and Jump Math programs a big asset

  • Love of working with children, especially those who think different a necessity

  • Creativity, independent worker with team spirit

  • Standard computer/tech skills

  • Fluency in English is required for this position

  • Nonprofit experience and fundraising skills are definite assets

  • Willingness to work flexible hours outside of usual business hours, as tutoring component will be taking place during after school hours or potentially on weekends

Hours: This is a 28-hour/week position and a 1-year contract to start, with the potential for extension dependent upon program success and successful fundraising. As noted, this job will require work beyond regular business hours due to the tutoring needs of our youth clients. The current vision is noon-7pm, 4 days per week, Mon-Fri and this is subject to change based on program needs. There may also be opportunity to expand this position in the future to full-time, dependent upon the successful growth of the program and successful fundraising. 

Pay Scale: This position pays $25-$27/ hour, dependent upon experience (gross annual salary of $36 400 – $39 312 for 28 hours/week), plus an employee benefits package.

Location: This position will be delivered from LDAPR's Mississauga office (based in Streetsville) with some limited opportunity for virtual work when necessary. Tutoring sessions will be offered in-person at our office and virtually.
