About this position

Reporting to the Director, this management position directs the day-to-day activities of the Prevention & Youth Services Team.  The essence of the position is two fold: 1) to work closely with the teams within the department to design custom interdisciplinary treatment plans for new child-in-care cases and to then assign those cases to the Prevention & Youth Services team based on their areas of specialty and; 2) to design and oversee the delivery of a full range of programs, workshops and activities for children/youth in the Squamish Nation community.  The incumbent is responsible for supervising 12 +/- staff and ensuring that they manage caseloads, workshops and activities responsibly, keeping the children safe and well at all times.  This position ensures all staff keep detailed records, report critical incidences and attend team meetings to discuss progress of each child on their caseload.  The incumbent manages budgets on a daily basis with the authority delegated by the Director and according to the approved budget.  Works with Director to determine strategies to move the Prevention & Youth Services division forward, set goals, create and implement action plans and evaluate the process and results.

Typical Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Initiates direct service responses to requests for Prevention & Youth S Provides temporary outreach services, refers cases to Case Management team as appropriate and oversees the coordination of wellness groups. Reports incidents to appropriate management team member regarding children and youth in the Squamish Nation community i.e. neglect, abuse, etc.
  • Develops and maintains working relationships with other Departments within the Squamish Nation as well as external bodies i.e. public/private schools, government agencies, child & youth services providers, etc.
  • Works with Ayas Men Men Case Management team to complete new case intakes and delegates to team members based on specialty. Identifies barriers, develops individualized care plans in conjunction with Case Social Workers, completes casework goal planning and participates in progress reviews.
  • Oversees the paperwork, reports, investigations, assessments, evaluations and caseloads of the team. Conducts random audits on case files ensuring confidential reports, child and family social histories, referral information and assessments are being completed according to regulations and procedures.
  • Develops, implements and manages systems and procedures to support planning and success of the Prevention & Youth Services programs. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness, appropriateness and adequacy of programs/policies and makes recommendations to the Director. Tracks statistics for reporting to Director annually.
  • Increases member knowledge and awareness of available Prevention & Youth Services resources and services. Promotes, via the community newsletter, programming offered by the Department, professional development events, education/awareness events, etc. Coordinates and promotes community awareness events and acts as a liaison.
  • Develops and coordinates Prevention & Youth Services programs. Reviews, approves and oversees all Youth Centre programming and activities. Works with team to brainstorm ideas for programming offered to the children and youth within the community.
  • Works with the Director on annual budget planning for the Prevention & Youth Services program, making recommendations regarding program need. Costs new programs, makes program adjustments, maintains budget records and produces reports for Director review.
  • Creates strategic work plan with Director for the Prevention & Youth Services team. Sets annual goals, targets and objectives with the Director. Completes quarterly reports regarding the progress and completion of the goals and objectives. Annually prepares a year-end report for Director review regarding the Prevention & Youth Services program.
  • Collaborates with the management team regarding the training, development, coaching and feedback of staff. Assists the Director with program and practices audits, hiring of facilitators, orientations, etc. and acts as a liaison.
  • Manages staff.
  • Supervises the health and safety of employees and adheres to workplace Health & Safety policies, safe work practices and procedures.
  • Participates as a member of Prevention & Youth Services and Ayas Men Men Child & Family Services Teams.

Education, Level of Experience & Hiring Requirements:

  • Bachelors Degree in Child and Youth Care, Social Work, or a related/relevant field from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Minimum of 4 to 5 years of directly related experience in the majority of specialties listed in the job description including outdoor programs, program instruction, child and youth support, etc.
  • As career progresses, incumbent will be required to successfully complete job-required, short- term upgrading, training and courses relating to staff supervision, leadership, staff wellness, child abuse and neglect, child development, counselling in anger management, grief and loss issues, motivation, etc.
  • Experience as an intermediate level user of the Internet, Microsoft Office Applications i.e. Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.
  • Working experience with a large scale computerized database system. Experience with JD Edwards is an asset.
  • Previous experience working in a First Nations community (particularly Squamish) is an asset.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends as required.
  • Must be able to travel.
  • Must have a valid BC Driver’s License Class 4 or 5. Class 7N may be considered.
  • Must have a reliable vehicle and current auto insurance.
  • Must successfully complete Criminal Records Vulnerable Sector Check as per Squamish Nation Policy.
  • May be willing to consider Grade 12 plus a minimum of 13 years of demonstrated and proven work experience managing Child & Youth Prevention Services teams, programs and daily operations.
