COUNSELLOR - BILINGUAL (French & English)
REMOTE (work from home)

RATE OF PAY: $23.00 per hour/ plus 1.25 overnight shift premium
Paid Hours: 31.5 hours per week
Positions: 10 roles available
Location: Work from home role
Role: Permanent full time employee with benefits
Rotations: 2 week rotation with 1st week having Wednesday & Thursday off / 2nd week has Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday off/ then back to rotation 1 which is Monday

Rotation 1: Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday
The shift is ten (10) hours long, nine (9) hours paid, starting at between 8:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. and ending ten (10) hours later between 6:00 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. ATLANTIC TIME.

Rotation 2: Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday
The shift is ten (10) hours long, nine (9) hours paid, starting at between 8:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. and ending ten (10) hours later between 6:00 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. ATLANTIC TIME.

Applicants must be available to work shifts as posted. Shift schedules may be revised on review of service needs.

Mandatory training starting on November 26th or December 10 for one 1 week (Monday to Friday) from 10:30 am to 6:30 p.m.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Our counsellors provide high quality professional telephone, web and chat-line counselling, education /referral to children and youth contacting Kids Help within a context of protection and empowerment of children and families to support the care of children and adolescents. The successful incumbents will provide assessment, counselling and support to children and youth in crisis and where appropriate provide referral to local community services to ensure effective professional response to the specific crisis. This includes assisting children and youth in distress and/or requesting supportive and educational services using methods and interventions defined within the context of professional social work practice while incorporating additional skills generally gained through exposure to other “helping professional practices and methods”, and completing required documentation to support direct service for telephone or chat-line interventions.

Our counsellors also:
• Participate and attend in-service training, clinical consultations, monthly staff meetings, shift debriefs, and other professional development activities
• Maintain a sound knowledge of various national and provincial laws affecting the lives of children and young people at risk to provide sound decision making support regarding appropriate and relevant referral to community authorities
• Share areas of expertise and participate in developing resources for the department
• Follow professional problem solving models
• Actively participate in the process of individual clinical supervision and coaching
• Facilitate the growth and understanding of the importance of a healthy lifestyle in which each child or youth is equipped with various tools and skills required to respond to the day-to-day demands of living in a dynamic family group, within a community and within a larger society
• Represent the Kids Help Phone counselling service in a variety of venues, e.g. to volunteers, donors, educational settings, the media, as requested

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:
• Degree or diploma in applied social service, with preference given to social worker that is eligible for registration with a regulatory body for the Province they are working in
• Minimum three years of relevant experience in a social service sector
• Demonstrated experience in counselling and crisis intervention (telephone counselling preferred)
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to create and maintain trusting relationships with youth as they define themselves
• The ability to engage clients in non-judgemental problem solving
• The ability to analyze situations, make appropriate decisions concerning clients’ needs and provide appropriate therapeutic service
• Fluently bilingual in English and French for bilingual positions
• Knowledge of laws and services directly impacting the lives of children and youth in Canada
