ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Director, Community Development to join our team in North Vancouver on a permanent full-time basis. Reporting to Council & Co-Chairs, the Senior Director, Community Development brings the community together and takes collective action to address the common challenges in the community and seeks the empowerment of the community.
He/She is responsible for providing vision, leadership, and direction in the planning, implementation and assessment of community development departments in education, employment & training, health, child and family services, language & culture, public works, housing, recreation, emergency services, membership services and more for Squamish Nation members.
The successful candidate will be skilled in leading and managing a team of directors in the Community Development branch of the Squamish Nation and will work closely with the SN Council to meet annual and long-term objectives set through the Community and Strategic Plan.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
- Works with Council and executive leadership to develop Strategic Community Plans.
- Collaboratively with Community Development Directors, establishes annual and long-term department workplans.
- Oversees management of Community Development Directors/Sr. Managers.
- Works with Community Development Director, Finance Director, other executive level Directors and Squamish Nation Council to develop, monitor and review the sector’s annual budget and spending.
- Works with Community Development Directors, relevant Council Committees and Squamish Nation Council to develop, revise, communicate and evaluate sector policies and processes.
- Liaisons with other executive level Directors to ensure consistency in application of policies and processes to support and protect the Nation’s operational, financial and reputational excellence.
- Participates on committees and/or assists sectors with financial, strategic and operational considerations associated with a wide range of programs, projects/initiatives or proposals.
- Provides mentorship/coaching to support the development/learning of their Directors/Senior Managers.
- Ensures Community Development Directors are meeting their objectives and ensures that the departments have the resources they require.
- Develops and maintains a strong understanding/connection to the Squamish Nation culture and community.
- Identifies gaps in service delivery to membership and trends in First Nations service provisions.
- Prepares/presents briefing notes/reports to Council and SN Membership, as per established process/required.
- Monitors KPIs of reporting departments, providing support/direction as required.
- Represents Squamish Nation as per established process.
- Supervises the health and safety of employees and adheres to workplace Health & Safety Policies, safe work practices and procedures.
- Participates as a member of Squamish Nation Executive Leadership Teams.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
To be successful in this role, you will have a Bachelor or Masters degree in Public Administration, Business, Leadership, Governance, Public Policy, FN Studies, Sociology, or a relevant/related field degree from a recognized post-secondary institution combined with a minimum of 10 years (with Masters/LLB/CPA or comparable relevant certification) or 15 years (with Bachelor degree) relevant/related experience in the majority of duties listed above.
Our ideal candidate will be an experienced manager with a track record of effectively developing, motivating and managing diverse and high-performing teams, establishing and completing objectives, and evaluating and managing performance to drive standards of excellence and deliver strong organizational outcomes.
The ideal candidate will also have:
- Must have at least 5 years experience in an executive level management position with responsibility for 5 or more senior direct reports and 50 or more indirect reports.
- Demonstrated exceptional communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills in a complex working environment.
- Exposure to a First Nations administration/organization environment is an asset.
- Experience reporting to a Board or Council is preferred.
- Success with large budget management ($20 million minimum)
- Experience as an advanced level user MS Office, the internet, etc.
- Working experience with a large scale computerized database system. Experience with JD Edwards is an asset.
- Previous experience working in a First Nations Community (particularly Squamish) is preferred.
- Must have a valid BC Driver’s License Class 4 or 5, Class 7N may be considered.
- Must have a reliable vehicle, current auto insurance and be willing to travel as required.
- Must successfully complete Criminal Records Check as per Squamish Nation Policy.
