About this position

Job Role
This role will be split between grant writing and managing duties around the office. The bigger we get the more chaotic and unorganized things are becoming. We need someone to take ownership in keeping the team organized and taking the lead on completing/filing important documentation.

There are dozens of grants, competitions, and funding opportunities that T4C should be keeping an eye out for and applying to. We need the right team member that can articulate our ambitious goals in a concrete and comprehensive way. Any additional funding accelerates our growth and ultimately allows us to create even more impact both locally and abroad.

Your role includes:

  1. Scanning the environment for national and international funding opportunities that would fit T4Cs growth plans
  2. Applying for grants and articulating our ambitious plans in a comprehensive way
  3. Preparing payroll and expense reports
  4. Filing and remitting government payments
  5. Basic data entry and reporting
  6. Invoicing clients and administering payments
  7. Prepping monthly bookkeeping package
  8. Organizing/managing company files and shared drive
  9. Handling several human resource duties both in our office and warehouse
You Have:
  • 2+ years experience grant writing and completing administrative duties
  • Exceptional organizational and writing skills
  • A post-secondary degree in a relevant field
  • A proven track record: You’ve applied for and received some big grants in the past, whether that be for a non-profit or for-profit
  • Balance: You know how to manage your time effectively and prioritize what needs to be done
  • Confidence: You believe in yourself and the team around you
  • A life: You have passions outside of work and contribute to the community that you live in
You are:
  • Passionate for social change: Making a dent in the universe is something you want to be apart of
  • Entrepreneurial: You know what it means to grind, and you will get the job done no matter what comes in the way
  • Fun: You are easy to get along with and have a positive attitude
  • A fast learner: You are hungry to take on new projects to expand your knowledge; You execute, make a mistake, learn, and iterate to always be improving
  • A great communicator: You know how to keep everyone in the loop and get your message across clearly and concisely
  • Respectful: You are a leader, but you know when to follow
  • Focused and flexible: Sometimes you’ll work from the office, sometimes from home, and sometimes on the fly; no matter where it is, the job gets done
  • A leader: You have experience leading a team through stressful situations, achieving amazing results in the end
  • Fast paced: You thrive in stressful situations and are able to juggle multiple projects at once
What this job is not:
  • Easy: This job will be the most challenging role you’ve ever had. Working at a start-up is hard. Building a start-up while making a major social impact is harder. This job will test you and in the end, you will have one damn good story to tell.
  • Consistent: We expect you to find solutions, learn from mistakes, implement processes, and move on to the next project
  • Structured: Your day-to-day will change constantly adapting to the company’s needs
We need you to:
  • Think big: Execute in the moment, but always think ten steps ahead to bigger and better things
  • Innovate: Push both our social and business impact forward

About us

Textbooks for Change is a social enterprise and top rated B-Corp that believes education should be a right, not a privilege. We provide affordable and accessible educational material to students both locally and abroad.

We do this by:

  • Donating thousands of post-secondary textbooks to East African universities annually
  • Selling affordable used textbooks to North American students and using proceeds to help fund student-led impact initiatives
  • Diverting thousands of textbooks from landfills by recycling them efficiently

We have seen incredible growth across Canada the last three years, and now have our sights set on growing across North America. As we continue to scale in the next few years, we will look to leverage our current model and grow into the digital education space both in North America and East Africa.
