Salary Scale                      $62,087 to $74,804/year

Position Summary
:

The Early Years (EY) / Primary Care Nurse works as part of an interdisciplinary team within the Community Health Promotion and Early Years and Primary Care programs. The EY nurse is responsible to assist in the development, promotion, service delivery and evaluation of programs related to families, newborns, well babies and well children.

This role is responsible for providing prenatal and postnatal care, and well childcare. The role is also a lactation subject matter expert and provides support to clients and staff. Using evidence-based practice, the EY nurse promotes women’s health throughout the childbearing years, is a team and community resource for pregnant and lactating women, promotes and supports breastfeeding, and supports families. This role pays particular attention to healthy child development, newcomer families and those facing barriers to health and access to services.

Qualifications

  • Master in Nursing, desirable.
  • Bachelor of Nursing.
  • Current certification from the College of Nurses of Ontario or eligibility to obtain.
  • Current certification as a Lactation Consultant from IBCLC or demonstrated commitment to obtain and maintain.
  • Eligible for membership with the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario.
  • Minimum of 5 years nursing experience.
  • Experience working with pre and postpartum women and their babies.
  • 2 years relevant experience working in a community setting working with well babies.
  • 2 years community Lactation Consultant experience.
  • Experience working with vulnerable and diverse populations.
  • Knowledge of health promotion principles.
  • Strong clinical assessment skills.
  • Knowledge of breast assessment during pregnancy and lactation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the assessment of the newborn, well baby and well child.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the assessment of the lactating woman, newborn and children.
  • Knowledge of healthy baby and child development, and holistic family care.
  • Understanding and respect of diverse cultural, physical, emotional and psychological responses to birthing, lactation and parenting.
  • Understanding and knowledge of social determinants of health and health equity.
  • Experience in teaching one on one.
  • Strong group facilitation skills.
  • Good knowledge of community resources.
  • Good knowledge of the WHO Baby Friendly Initiative.
  • Experience in program development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
  • Oral and written fluency in English and French.
  • Good problem solving skills
  • Good interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Advocacy skills
  • Proficient with Windows-based computer systems, in particular email and MS Word.
