We are seeking a Data Analyst / Data Scientist who will lead the building of our data management practice, in matters of development impact and beyond. The Data Analyst will work closely with all parts of the organization, including the investments team (responsible for transactions) and operations team (responsible for external relations, strategy, and partnerships/innovation) to help FinDev Canada achieve its objectives. The successful candidate will work as part of a small and dynamic team. They will bring the requisite international mindset, technical skills and hands-on approach to help build FinDev Canada’s practices and processes in the areas of data analysis and reporting.  The successful candidate will be goal oriented and help optimize the organization’s transparency and effectiveness in its reporting and value-add to the development finance sector.
 
 
Key Responsibilities
 
Key responsibilities of the Analyst include the following:
  • Establish scalable, efficient processes for large scale data analyses. Focus on identifying economic and financial trends, opportunities, and challenges that can be used in strategy and intervention design as well as performance management;
  • Provide input for the selection and implementation of Information Technology solutions, including data management software and tools;
  • Provide client-facing support to portfolio companies to facilitate efficient and effective reporting and value add to clients, including advising how data analysis can be used in their business;
  • Maintain impact assessment tools, including external public economic and social datasets, used for transaction screening and due diligence;
  • Using global datasets, develop effective portfolio analysis and company benchmarking approaches to generate learnings and predictive capabilities on portfolio and company performance on impact;
  • Contribute to impact monitoring and dashboard creation and maintenance for internal and external reporting.

    Screening Criteria  
  • A degree from a recognized university in data science, economics, statistics, computer science, or in a related quantitative field
  • At least 5 years of relevant work experience (or combination of master’s degree and relevant experience) as a Data Analyst, Data Scientist or related role with a track record of manipulating complex datasets to generate clear and simple recommendations for the business
  • Experience in developing clear and consistent processes and tools for data collection, monitoring, learning, and reporting that enabled teams and/or clients to own and implement monitoring or reporting frameworks
  • Experience using database platforms for data collection, cleaning, aggregating and report generation
  • Proven skills to interact effectively with clients both virtually and in-person to deliver excellent customer support and skills transfer
  • Knowledge and experience with data visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI, or other)
Assets
  • Knowledge of web-based /open-source data collection tools (DHIS2, KoboToolbox, Open MRS, ODK, CommCare, CSPro, etc.)
  • Fluency in SQL, Python or R or other relevant software
  • Current expertise or interest in developing expertise in machine/statistical learning
  • Previous exposure or affinity for use of datasets/analysis related to economics, financial sector, development economics or related topics
  • Understanding of existing evidence base and evaluation approaches concerning the impact of private sector investments and/or development programs
  • Demonstrated ability in applied econometrics and model design and proficiency in econometric software
  • Experience working with – or in – developing countries
  • Knowledge of climate / emissions reporting or tools
  • Bilingual in both official languages
Location
  • The position is based in Montreal, Canada and may involve travel, both domestically and internationally.
Salary
  • $62,000 - $92,000 + performance-based incentive
