About this position

MCC Toronto is looking for teammate to lead our communications department and assist in our fund development department. The successful candidate will develop and actualize communication plans and provide strategic direction to expand MCC Toronto’s reach.

Furthermore, they will manage a weekly electronic newsletter and print media, produce content for MCC Toronto’s diverse social media networks, and assist in the communications needs of major events and fundraising initiatives.

Hours: Permanent Full Time (40 hours per week) with benefits following a 6-month probationary period.

Organizational Overview: MCC Toronto was established in 1973 as part of the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches denomination, a global LGBTQ+ Christian movement. Today, MCC Toronto is a place of vibrant, inclusive, and progressive spiritual community and worship, as well as a Human Rights Centre. With an average of 400 people attending worship every Sunday for three unique services in Non-COVID times and with a highly regarded Online Service during the COVID-19 pandemic; MCC Toronto is one of Canada’s premiere progressive churches. We are the spiritual home to people of many different religious backgrounds and beliefs, gender identities, gender expressions, and sexual orientations, racial and cultural backgrounds, countries of origin, socioeconomic realities, and abilities. MCC Toronto is rooted in the Christian tradition and the LGBTQ2+ community, and is growing into a nexus of inclusion, diversity and intersectionality. Our fastest growing element is young heterosexual parent families seeking to raise their children in an inclusive environment.

MCC Toronto is also home to several lifesaving initiatives like The Triangle Program; North America’s longest running LGBTQ2+ High School in partnership with the Toronto District School Board which meets in our building. Our signature social justice initiative is the LGBTQ+ Refugee Program which serves 800+ asylum seekers every year and has also sponsored 57 refugees with the help of sponsorship teams as Canada’s only LGBTQ+ exclusive Sponsorship Agreement Holder with the Federal Government. Job Description: The Manager of Communications and Development will:

  • Create and actualize communication plans for the overall organization and special events under the supervision of the Director of Development and Communication.
  • Coordinate weekly Communications Meetings with the Senior Pastor and Director of Development and Communications.
  • Attend staff meetings and work within the staff team to highlighting the life changing spiritual work and life saving human rights work of MCC Toronto.
  • Prepare and coordinate the content for our weekly electronic newsletter “The Query.”
  • Prepare and coordinate the content for our weekly print media and church bulletin The Sunday News (currently suspended due to COVID 19).
  • Manage MCC Toronto’s social media presence and website by creatively preparing relevant content and responding to enquiries.
  • Maintain MCC Toronto’s media engagement list and prepare occasional media releases and act as media liaison.
  • Support the implementation of the Annual Fundraising Plan including creation of communication materials around special events, donor recognition and fundraising.

Qualifications and competencies:

  • Minimum 3-years communication experience is required.
  • Experience working for or volunteering with a not-for-profit would be ideal
  • Fundraising experience in a non-profit environment would be an asset.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and executing multi-channel communication plans.
  • Experience in evaluating and improving communication effectiveness.
  • An exceptional and compelling writer.
  • Social media savvy is required.
  • Ability to do creative content creation including posters, banners, and social media posts.
  • Familiarity with WordPress and the Adobe Suite.
  • Membership in professional communication, marketing, or fundraising associations considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of and comfort with diverse communities is required.
  • Diversity training is an asset.
