The Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health is an award-winning Health Access Centre that provides holistic primary health care to First Nation, Inuit and Métis people living in Ottawa – one of the fastest growing and diverse urban Indigenous communities in Canada. Wabano is a fast-paced, client-oriented organization that models the Indigenous values of balance, respect and community interdependence.

 

Purpose of Position

Reporting to the Director of Programs, the Youth Program Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating activities for youth in accordance with funding requirements, which includes (but is not limited to): organizing and running four camps per year, running weekly programming for youth, the creation of a rooftop medicine garden, activities for youth and families in the rooftop garden, referral of youth to other Wabano services, support with the program evaluation and other required tasks to achieve funder objectives and objectives of the organization.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Organize and run high-quality weekly programming for youth, which includes cultural activities, entrepreneurship/social enterprise workshops and activities, life skills and employment readiness, or other identified activities activities/workshops that will help develop self-esteem and leadership skills for youth;
  • Support the team lead in the planning and implementation of the rooftop medicine garden;
  • After the implementation of the garden, run regular activities with community in the medicine garden;
  • Coordinate seasonal on-the-land activities for youth, partnering with other youth team staff;
  • Support the Youth Programs Team Lead to organize and run a program launch in accordance with funding requirements;
  • Work with the Youth Programs Team Lead and consultant(s) to conduct program evaluation;
  • Gather accurate statistical data monthly and input into the appropriate software;
  • Ensure that all aspects of the work plan have been addressed and completed on time;
  • Other duties as required.

 

Qualifications:

  • Post-Secondary degree in health or social services field;
  • 2 years of experience providing programming to youth;
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively on a team and independently;
  • Self-directed with a good work ethic;
  • Sound judgment and problem solving abilities;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Proficiency in the use of computers and various software applications;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with the Indigenous population and sensitivity to Indigenous issues;
  • The willingness to learn about Indigenous culture to better understand and serve the clients of the Centre;

 

Specifications:

  • Successful applicants will be asked to provide a criminal reference check to work with vulnerable population;
  • Preference will be given to applicants of First Nations, Inuit or Métis descent (please self-identify to receive preference).
