Change.org is searching for a Communications Director to use their media relations and communication skills to design and execute strategies to help large numbers of petition starters win powerful campaigns all across Canada.

We’re a social impact business (a public benefit company), and the largest tech platform focused on civic action in the world with 50m monthly users, 50,000 campaigns launched on the site every month, hundreds of millions of signatures per year, 200 staff, and a new revenue model that has grown by 500% in 2 years. We are profitable, growing fast, and executing on a plan to deepen and scale the social movements on our platform, from supporting Indigenous communities in Canada to secure more funding in the fight against COVID-19 to shining a light on unjust deportation orders. 

We are looking for a Communications Director who is great at media relations, communications and campaigning and has a passion for expanding our platform to mobilize hundreds of millions of people to take deeper civic action.

You will work remotely within Canada and report to our Country Director, Canada.  As a key member of our Canada country team, you’ll help Canadian petition starters win their campaigns for change. 

Key Outcomes 

  • Design and execute the communications strategy for campaigns with the potential for explosive growth and impact, through media, social media and other influence networks. 
  • Develop strong relationships with Canada’s national media and target local and niche outlets. Handle Canada-specific media inquiries and act as a media spokesperson for campaigns and Change.org Canada as necessary.
  • Manage efficient and scalable systems to help petition starters gain media attention and win campaigns. Measure media-related metrics and make sure we meet campaign goals.
  • Partner with our global communications team to establish Change.org as the leading tech and social change platform for people-powered impact in Canada.
  • Effectively lead our response to brand risk with crisis communications.
  • Collaborate with a North America-wide and global network of communications directors and managers to continuously improve our work. 

The most important skills and capabilities for the role are:

Communications and media: You’re an expert in messaging and framing, and repeatedly find the right narratives to engage online audiences, decision-makers, journalists, and other stakeholders. You set the standards of which campaigns we should escalate in the media and how to drive campaigns forward using our communications tools. You have exceptional writing, editing, and public speaking skills and you have experience as a spokesperson or speaking directly to media on the record.

Campaigning: You have innovative ideas on how to use communications, media, and storytelling to win local, national, and international campaigns -- and a willingness to take risks, to fail, and to adapt. 

Relationship-building: You love connecting with people and creating strong relationships, from petition starters to journalists to decision makers. People often start petitions on Change.org after experiencing trauma or hardship, and you’ll have the passion, commitment and respect to help them tell their stories to make change and seek justice.

Brand strategy and crisis comms: You understand people-powered campaigning and you set the standards of how we represent our brand with support from the global comms team. You are constantly thinking about how we can improve brand penetration and affinity. You are able to manage situations involving brand risk and crisis communications with input from executive leadership, you have proven experience in rapid-response situations, and thrive in uncertainty.

Management and systems: You have excellent people management skills, you’re passionate about achieving team success, and you inspire, motivate and train teams. You create systems that allow us to provide comms support to petition starters at scale.

Target Experience

  • 7+ years relevant experience in communications, public relations, government relations, campaigning or journalism.
  • Experience working with a media database such as Cision, Muckrack or Meltwater.

While this full-time role is based remotely within Canada, we’d ideally like this candidate to reside on the East Coast. Our team is high impact, low ego, and has an amazing culture to be part of.

Change.org is a global company, and salaries are adjusted for cost of labor in each city. (For example, an annual salary of a Communications Director is $105,500 in Toronto$99,000 in Montreal, or $103,500 in Vancouver). In exceptional circumstances, we may offer below the listed salary for high potential candidates with less experience, or above it for candidates with significantly more experience.
